What's up with connected.com??

I was wondering if anyone is having problems connecting to Connected Inc. of
Belview?? I have been trying to make contact, from long distance, through a
voice or telnet connection for at least a week. I was able to get through to
them over a week ago on the voice phone, and they told me that I could telnet
into their systems through cascade.connected.com. But I haven't been able to
get through by telnet. Nor does my Whois NIC client recognize
sierra.connected.com. Are there any connected.com user's who could help me
get through to their systems??? No one answers my long distance phone calls
either. They don't even have the courtesy of having any voice mail or
messaging system. I've heard they have been having some business
reorganization activities lately. Thanks.

Connected.Com apparently had a hacker attack it's system this past weekend. I
spoke with someone there yesterday and they said they SHOULD be up by today,
Fri Sept 30. I suppose this is only optimistic, due to there shaky history lately...
The person on the phone said that they needed to do a complete re-compile...
Let's all cross our fingers...

Connected, Inc. went into Chapter 11 not too long ago. They
had a history of poor service, service disruptions,
non-communication with customers, and (some said) general
incompetence. But they provided a cheap and worth it service.
A couple of weekends ago they abruptly went off the air and
then announced they were under "new management." They started
to bring back services such as news and mail and showed signs
of normalizing things. They even communicated something of
what was going on.
Last week, they abruptly went off the air again and later
posted a message saying they and "other systems" had been
victimized by criminals who hacked them. (Anyone know of any
"other systems" who recently had problems from hackers???)
They have maintained a posting for 3 days now that promised
return on "friday" and still they are not up. They stopped
answering their voice phone of 562-4224, though once they had a
message machine connected to it "for those who need a call
back." Most recently they just let the phone ring and ring.
Those of us who have subscribed there hope that they will
return and get back to normal. I had hoped they had learned
the importance of ongoing communication with users, but the
message you get when you call by modem hasn't been changed in
days. It cites "router problems" and "hacker" crime and you
just don't know what to believe.
Connected provided all Internet services and good access and
low costs and poorest possible customer service. I wish them
luck and hope for "new management" to succeed in getting a real
service going again. I am not able to trust them any more. I
am glad I had had the chance to download all my saved messages
during the most recent period of actual service. I am sure
many others feel lost and cut off. Keep your fingers crossed.

I had heard that Kirk Moore is no longer in charge of Connected. A
gentleman by the name of 'Sam' (sorry, can't think of the last name) is
now running the operation.

it appears that there is some fairly major brokeness over there.
There is a fairly good chance that they're being on the level that they
got destructively hacked. If they didn't have good disaster recovery
policies in place it could easily take several days to put things back
together. The problem isn't so much one of restoring data as it is of
determining what happened, how it happened, and what needs to be done to
prevent a recurrance.
I've heard rumors as well about Connected; my impression is that they've
had a run of remarkably bad luck, only some of which is their fault.
I hope that Connected makes it through this episode. There are some good
people working there. Furthermore, even if (as I do) you use one of
Connected's competitors, the loss of Connected would be a major blow to
the Seattle IP scene. Connected is one of the big players, and their
competition keeps the other big players on the ball.

Speaking as a System Administrator of Connected's competition, I think the
opposite is true. If the market in Seattle was not full of good
internet providers, Connected could have gone on the way it was.
Instead, it seems they are trying to clean house.
I, too, wish them good luck and look forward to competing with Connected
for subscribers and market share in the future.

Unless someone can quote the day/page of the article, I would seriously
doubt this.
Connected filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the middle of
August. Since then new ownership has taken over (ie, Kirk Moore is out),
and after one failed attempt to bring the systems into line without
disrupting service too much more, they pulled the plug and are,
appearently, workoffline to rebuild the system.
Modems still answer the main number (they still have their annex servers),
562-4120, and present a message that apologizes for the down-time, and
says thay had planned to be back online last friday, and are now hoping to
come online today today (Tuesday). It aslo says that they and a "large
california internet provider" were maliciously attacted by a hacker who
did lots of damage on 8/26. No hosts were accessable from the annex server.
If I had my guess, I don't think that whatever comes back online will
still be called Connected. That name will forever be equated with
disconnected service.

Why do you say that? That seems like a very curious statement to make.
I'll note that I have no connection with them, I've never been on their
system, don't know any of their employees and have no stake in any of
their competitors (other than as a user). But I've always been
interested in businesses that go under, not only as someone
involved in small business, but also as someone who was laid off from a
company that went south largely by their own hand.
My impression from reading connected.general was that while hackers may
have played a role in their problems, it was minor at best. If the
messages on that group were accurate Connected had serious management
problems, serious technical problems (caused by poor management), poor
business practices (can you imagine not billing users for months!), and
a general contempt and bad attitude toward their customers.
But I agree with your last paragraph. As much as I like Robert and
Eskimo North, a health competitive situation is best for the user
community, so I too hope Connected returns under proper management.

Connected is temporarily offline, according to an article in last night's
Seattle Times. They apparently were hacked recently, in addition to going
through financial difficulties. The new owners promise to be up again "soon."

In case some of you are not dis-connected customers, what Doug is saying
is that there were no (recent) file backups and the customer records were
NEVER correct....
I would also like to subscribe to that dimension's Seattle Times... good

Brokeness indeed! It sounds like most or all of their machines are sitting
on some District Attorney's desk somewhere according to what others on here
and the Seattle Times have been saying.

the Seattle Times) thinks that Kirk Moore is something pretty. If that is,
indeed, the situation, then I am hard pressed to beleive that we (the mere
public) will ever see an accurate story regarding (dis)Connected, Inc. in the
Seattle Times.
