Hello all,

It seems Seance has fallen into one of its periodic slumbers, so forgive me for awakening it with these couple of tidbits...

First, it seems Magnet Magazine here in the States shared a MP3 from the new Isidore record back on January 6 which I missed until today and hadn't seen mentioned elsewhere. The MP3 can be found here: http://www.magnetmagazine.com/2012/01/06/mp3-at-3pm-isidore. According to the snippet the album was supposed to be released today. Anyone seen it or have an opinion on it? The Isidore website reveals nothing.

Second, I had a bit of a conversation with Martin Kennedy via Twitter private message last week during which he revealed he and Mr. Kilbey will be recording a third album together beginning next month. He hopes it will be out by the end of the year. Apparently, the decision to record was only made about the first of the month. They intended to try and get together last year, but apparently schedules didn't permit them to get together. He said this news isn't hush-hush and was fine to share...

Hope the new year is off to a good start for everyone!

I've heard both the 14th and the 21st as release dates for Isidore.

I have the album and wrote most of the following after an initial two listens.

I listened to this through twice...with an hour or so between. This is still very much of an initial assessment...it's mostly picking out the things that struck me -- for good or for bad -- and often the most satisfying bits take much longer to surface for me. Also, I generally don't pay close attention to lyrics on the first few listens...sometimes they do stand out though -- rather I try to get an overall feel for the songs.

The Privateer -- Very cinematic...I felt as if I was watching the beginning of a grand, expensively produced movie in a big theatre. Really like it. The first time through I did find the background voice/chatter at the end annoying (although I found them effective at the beginning of the song) and felt it went on too long. One second listen I didn't find that nearly as annoying and the outro seemed a lot shorter.

Life Somewhere Else -- this one I immediately liked. Liked on first listen, liked more second time around.

Old Black Spirit -- I expected it to be more angry. It feels more sad and bewildered, which I think is actually more effective.

Recoil -- more bite to this one.

Oh My Sky -- First time through I didn't care for this at all. Second time through I found I really liked the music, but found the lyrics early on clunky. The last few minutes of the song really grew on me though, especially the second time through. Still don't think the lyrics in the song among SK's best.

Just Dust -- When it first started I though oh fuck I'm going to hate this one, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. I was surprised.

Belle in Mid Air -- Breezy and sunny...until you actually listen to the lyrics. Effective.

The Headlight Child -- perhaps it was because I had a headache, but I found the drum sound way too loud and prominent. I'll have to listen without a headache....

Initially I found the middle of the album the weakest -- Reappearance and Oh My Sky didn't thrill me on first listen -- but upon a second listen I'm not so sure that is correct. The Headlight Child (3rd listen now -- still with headache) is still bugging me.... The Kilbey Kennedy albums are very consistent...lovely all the way through. MK's music seems to bring out the beautiful in Steve's voice, and they are very appealing immediately. This album has more stylistic variation which makes it less immediate for me. Nothing I hate -- I didn't get any unbearable urge to skip any songs -- which is always a very positive sign. It's a good album...very good. Is it one of SK's very best to me? That's going to take more time and listens...which isn't bad at all.

Upon a few more listens I think I could drop a few songs from the album and still be very happy with it.  It's not that I hate them (The Headlight Child still bugs me for the same reasons it did initially), it's more that the album is long and I wouldn't really miss them within the context of the album.  I'd like them as bonus songs though.  So that's a very minor point for me.  Plus I saw a review by someone else who thought The Headlight Child was the best song on the album, so it's a good thing for him it's on there.  :-)

this is great Holly, thanks.   How do you think this one compares to the first?

Good to hear SK and MK are recording soon, though I'm really hoping for a new Church album, or a new SK solo album - or a follow up to the David Neil album.

I ordered my Isidore copy for £8.99 from cdwow.com (with a £1 off voucher they sent me) and it was dispatched yesterday. Even without the discount it's not a bad price as I usually end up spending a small fortune on SK's albums due to them only being released in Oz or the US and come with exuberant postage charges.
Currently winging their way to me via Snail Mail is Isidore, David Neil and GB3. I cannot wait to be in Kilbey heaven.
I love the Isidore front cover. Reminds me of home in N.Ireland. Anyone know where the shot is from?

Cheers

Stephen

I find it hard to say how it compares to the first Isidore album.  It sounds like Isidore to me, yet also seems more personal to me.  It's a beautiful album, but there's a lot of hurt in many of those songs.  As much as I tend to like melancholia in songs, there are times I just can't listen to this album. When the album arrived was a particularly touchy time for me, so I imagine that feeling will fade with time.

I very much like the Kilbey Kennedy songs, so am always looking forward to hearing more.  A new church album...I'm in an I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it mode on that one.  Can't really complain though...we've been pretty spoiled with releases from them over the past decade.  Steve has mentioned fairly recently (over the past several months) on his blog that he is planning on making a completely solo album -- SK doing everything.  I think that could be pretty cool.  He's getting his new place set up, so with any luck the creative juices will get flowing and this project will happen.  I hated David Neil -- pretty much every aspect of it -- and am trying to pretend it never happened, so that one I'm hoping is a one off. lol

Good prices, free postage and sign up for their newsletter and they send discount coupons about twice a month.
I seem to remember getting Untitled #23 there.
