Can anyone help me find the requirements in the Calif. bldg. code for required separation of untreated wood from slabs on grade?  It's 8" from exposed earth (2304.11.11.2.2) but I don't find the similar requirement for distance from a slab.

Also, is anything other than a concrete slab adequate to allow reduction of the 8" distance?  Gravel, loose pavers, brick pavers, etc.?

TIA,

Ralph,

Someone about a week or two ago mentioned that a CBC supplement was issued about reducing this 8" requirement where paving occurs.

There's a new section added in the 2007 Supplement to the 2006 IBC as
follows:
2304.11.2.5 Wood siding. Clearance between wood siding and earth on the
exterior of a building shall not be less than 6 inches (152 mm) or less
than 2 inches (51 mm) vertical from concrete steps, porch slabs, patio
slabs, and similar horizontal surfaces exposed to the weather except
where siding, sheathing, and wall framing are of naturally durable or
preservative-treated wood.

Although I think the section number should be 2304.11.2.6 to be
consistent with the current code.

Are we talking about ***SIDING*** or ***SHEATHING***?

I have not seen the supplement, but the existing section 2304.11.2.6 already
allows 6" clearance to wood ***SIDING***. Section 2304.11.2.2 does require
8" clearance to wood ***SHEATHING*** and FRAMING [except 6" is ok for
DSA/OSHPD projects when concrete slab or asphalt paving occurs].

I think the exception implies that it applies to siding, sheathing, and
wall framing:

"...except where siding, sheathing, and wall framing are of naturally
durable or preservative-treated wood"

Since the siding is presumably the lowest point of the three, that's
where it would be measured from.
