Gang,
In order to facilitate our upcoming 2008 fleche, I’ve created a mailing/discussion list located at:
http://groups.google.com/group/sdrando-fleche . I encourage all interested parties to join as soon
as possible. If you have problems with the link, let me know and I’ll send you an invite to the list.
We are modifying by 1.2 miles (2k) the finishing control for the upcoming fleche
on Mar 27-30. The new finish control will be located at the Denny’s located at 487 Harbor
Dr S in Oceanside. This is 1.2 miles north of the original finish control at the pier. There
is a Triathlon scheduled at the pier for the morning of the 29th and Pacific St may be closed.
In my opinion the Denny’s makes for a better finishing point (they have food!)
We also have an official ruling from RUSA that out and back routes are not acceptable
for a fleche’. Out-and-back route segments are permitted, such as to obtain food and supplies
in remote regions, but no control may be used more than once and no road segment may be
used more than once in the same direction. If an out-and-back route segment is utilized in
the overall route design, a control point must be located at its turnaround. I believe
several of you have submitted preliminary routes with short out and back segments. Make sure
you have controls placed appropriately.
I have heard from a reliable source, that RUSA will be scrutinizing the entire fleche’
process. They may ask for our routes in advance, or even worse, ask for them after the event
to ensure routing guidelines are followed. So read up on the rules and play it by the book.
I also encourage teams to come up with a team name. This will help in the registration
process and help me in keeping things straight.
Best!
