OK, I swear that it's purely coincidence that Naomi Wise reviewed this
in yesterday's Reader and my going there last night. I hadn't looked
at
a Reader until sitting down at Crazy Burger last night... FWIW, Naomi
Wise gave this three stars, which is a pretty amazing rating for a
burger
joint.

But, this *is* a tasty burger. One of the best I've had in San Diego.
Char grilled, hand-formed patties (not the pseudo-hand-formed-patties
you get for Carl's Six-Dollar Burger), relatively tasty beef cooked
just
slightly under medium (still pink in the middle), an OK, but
grill-toasted bun, more red onion and tomato slices than you'd need
for two burgers, romain lettuce. Fries are good, but there are better
fries around (e.g. Canada Steakburger). My wife ordered the soup of
the day, which was a tomato-basil, and it was quite good and amazingly
cheap ($2 for a very large bowl). Burgers run from $6 up, with some
unusual choices, like Ostrich and Aligator. Supposedly they had a
Rattlesnake burger but the health department shut them down because
it's endangered/prohibited in California (but not in Arizona, where
they
were getting their meat). It's at the corner of 30th and Howard, which
is one block south of El Cajon Blvd.

Gotta support you, Mike. I ate there about a week prior to the review.
I had the burger with mushroom ragu (forestiere). It was good, but not
stellar. I expected a bit more flavor in the kmushroom ragu and it was
VERY bland for a mushroom dish.

The owners told me it was interesting that rattlesnake is served in
several places in the Bay area, but our local yokels have barred it
until they can determine it is farmed reptile, not wild. I thought the
rattlers were from Nevada??? I don't remember what Wise said about
that. I guess they are too anal retentive to accept what San Francisco
folks figured out.

They have a decent website where you can check out their menu before
going:

Three of us ate there yesterday, and it was crowded, busy, and noisy.
Though it's order at the counter & deliver to the table, it's a big step
above fast food. Food was excellent. The hamburger meat rivaled the best
in town (Harry's, I suppose), and was prepared "medium". Several
interesting beers, nice condiments. Three burgers, two fries (huge
serving!), two beers, one soft drink = $30.

The idea is to make a good beef hamburger, cook it properly, then throw
a dollop of some ethnicity sauce on it. Terrific...!

Other meats are also available. My wife had a lamburger, and loved it.

They sold out to the people running Crazy Burger. The place carries
the name Tioli's Crazy Burger to keep paper work down to a minimum
(ficticious licensing and so on with a complete name chage - likewise
transferring the beer/wine license).
