I have a fairly nice fpga if anyone wants to borrow it to try to do
this.  I hate writing VHDL (i.e. I'm terrible at it and forgot it
after I learned it) It is currently in storage and I'll be bringing it
to NYC with the rest of my gear in a couple weeks.
