URGENT: SciRuby Summer of Code: $1500 Research Fellowship

Everyone,

I've only gotten two applications so far, and the unofficial deadline is Monday. Please, if you know people who might be interested, forward the information.

This fellowship is essential to achieving our project goals. If we can find a serious student to work on this, it'll be much easier to go back and ask for additional money next summer (either from Brighter Planet or another organization).

Fellowship Description

This $1500 summer fellowship, sponsored by Brighter Planet, is intended for undergraduate and graduate science and engineering students interested in going into research.

The Ruby Science Foundation is a group dedicated to bringing scientific libraries, including SciRuby and NMatrix, to the Ruby programming language.

A successful applicant will spend three months this summer working under the hood on SciRuby and/or NMatrix. Fellow will work with Ruby Science Foundation mentors to research and develop a project plan, and then will implement the feature or project.

While candidates should ideally be located in either Austin, Texas, or Provo, Utah, telecommuting is also a possibility.

Requirements:

- Current enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate program, or completion of such a program within the previous twelve-month period.
- Good working knowledge of C and Ruby, version control (ideally git), and *nix (Linux, Unix, or Mac).
- Completion of an introductory course on algorithms and data structures.
- Demonstrated interest in science/engineering research.
- Initiative and good communication skills.
- Access to equipment (e.g., computer with some sort of *nix-like OS, or at least a terminal for ssh).
- Ideally, U.S. resident status.
