A congressional subcommittee voted Tuesday to subpoena an
adviser to former
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld about the Bush administration's
harsh interrogation
policies toward terror detainees.
Douglas Feith, former undersecretary of defense for policy,
had agreed to
testify but changed his mind hours before he was to appear last week
at a House
Judiciary subcommittee hearing.
Feith is believed to have been instrumental in drafting
government interrogation
policies in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, policies
that critics
say led to torture.
His lawyer said Feith changed his mind when he learned that
Col. Lawrence
Wilkerson, an aide to former Secretary of State Colin Powell, would
also testify
The lawyer, John Moustakas, wrote the committee that Wilkerson
has made
defamatory comments about Feith, calling Feith stupid and a `card-
carrying member
of the Likud party' and more loyal to Israel than the U.S.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the subcommittee chairman, said he had
never seen a
witness behave as Feith did.
"One witness' dislike for another witness cannot become a
reason
not to provide critical testimony to Congress," said Nadler, D-N.Y.
Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., said Feith justifiably believed
the hearing
would not be a respectful discussion about terror detainees if
Wilkerson shared
the microphone.
Republicans asked the Democrats who control the panel to give
Feith the
opportunity to appear voluntarily without a subpoena. Rep. Steve King,
R-Iowa, said
the panel was "trying to use a sledgehammer when maybe a flyswatter
would do."
Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., chairman of the House Judiciary
Committee, said
he hoped Feith would appear voluntarily and that the committee would
not need to
issue a subpoena.

Judiciary subcommittee hearing.

policies in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, policies
that critics
say led to torture.
His lawyer said Feith changed his mind when he learned that
Col. Lawrence
Wilkerson, an aide to former Secretary of State Colin Powell, would
also testify
The lawyer, John Moustakas, wrote the committee that Wilkerson
has made
defamatory comments about Feith, calling Feith stupid and a `card-
carrying member

Cahn's
article Team B: The Trillion Dollar Experiment, was "an experiment in
competitive
threat assessments approved by then-Director of the Central
Intelligence Agency
George Herbert Walker Bush. Teams of 'outside experts' were to take
independent
looks at the highly classified data used by the intelligence community
to assess
Soviet strategic forces in the yearly National Intelligence Estimates
(NIEs). NIEs
are authoritative and are widely circulated within the government.
U.S. national
security policy on various issues as well as the defense budget are
based on their
general conclusions. Although NIEs represent the collective judgment
of the entire
intelligence community, the lead agency is the CIA."
Actually, Hessing writes, there were three B Teams: "One
studied Soviet
low-altitude air defense capabilities, one examined Soviet
intercontinental ballistic
missile (ICBM) accuracy, and one investigated Soviet strategic policy
and objectives.
But it is the third team, chaired by Harvard professor Richard Pipes,
that ultimately
received considerable publicity and is commonly referred to as Team
B."

"Team members included Richard Pipes (father of Daniel Pipes,
director
of the Middle East Forum) and William van Cleave, both of whom would
become members
of the second Committee on the Present Danger, as well as Gen. Daniel
O. Graham,
whose 'High Frontier' missile defense proposal foreshadowed President
Ronald
Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), or "Star Wars." The
team's
advisory panel included Paul Wolfowitz, Paul H. Nitze, and Seymour
Weiss--all close
associates of Albert Wohlstetter. Although Richard Perle played no
direct role in
Team B, he was instrumental in setting it up. It was Perle who had
introduced Richard
Pipes, a Polish immigrant who taught Czarist Russian history at
Harvard, to Sen.
Henry Jackson, catapulting Pipes into a clique of fanatically anti-
Soviet hawks.
Pipes, who served as Team B's chairman, later said he chose Wolfowitz
as his
principal Team B adviser 'because Richard Perle recommended him so
highly.'"

The Saudi and Sharia Bigotry and Violence issue: Hypocrisy or
double standards
is bigotry. Bigotry begets anger, frustration, and violence.
Violence begets violence.
It's hard to believe a prophet of God would sanction hypocrisy.
I'd like to hear the Saudis answer this. The Saudis are not
living
in Palestine. There's no excuse for what the Saudis do to their own
population.
The US and Israel we are not much better, but at least I get to say,
"SHOW
ME WHERE MOHAMMED SAID BIGOTRY AND VIOLENCE ARE A DIRECTIVE FROM
GOD."
I could be killed for saying that in Saudi Arabia, even though
it's
common sense and the whole rest of the world thinks the violent answer
to crime
in the Saudi criminal courts and the insane Sharia laws disagrees with
global human
rights doctrine.
I realize we, the USA, did the Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib
thing, but it would
be good if Saudi Arabia and other Muslims were in a position to
condemn USA abuses.
Look at Dick Cheney, Bush and Alberto Gonzales. These three are
psychopaths, but
then, there's the Muslim community, and especially, Saudi Arabia's
version
of justice.
Saudi Arabia is crucial, just like Britain is crucial, in
having the world
accept that there is no aristocracy among men, except in their natural
talent and
how they use this talent to help others. That's the God standard.
