Subject: New Blumenthal Plum Island report...Re: [SpinLyme] Luft
discovers clue to rapid spread of Lyme disease
Date: Sep 2, 2008 5:00 AM
No.
Go to the comments section of the new Courant article on
Plum Island. I demonstrate that flagellin is the means to
sort borreliae, not bacteriophage-vectored plasmids, as I told
the Albany Legislators back when I was writing Pam Weintraub's
book in 2001.

If the Courant deletes those posts, I have it saved and will
republish to my website.

> Prof discovers clue to rapid spread of Lyme disease
>
> Stony Brook professor Benjamin Luft has unlocked what may be the key to
explaining the accelerated spread of Lyme disease across America and
Europe in the
past two decades.
>
> Lyme disease is the most common bug-borne disease in the United States,
with more than 20,000 cases reported each year.
>
> Luft, a professor of medicine, and his colleagues say a clone of the bacteria
that causes Lyme disease could account for the increase in cases in
the past 20
years.
>
> The team genetically tested 68 samples of the bacteria, known as Borrelia
burgdorferi, and found that a specific clone of the bacteria spread
quickly both
in Europe and the United States, which Luft said may explain the
recent spread of
Lyme disease in the two areas. The data also suggested a recent
migration of the
bacteria across the ocean.
>
> In an article detailing the investigation and findings of the team in
the July issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases, the team said
traditionally, the
emergence of Lyme disease in North America since the 1970s has been
attributed to
an increasing overlap of human and B. Burgdorferi habitats. But on the
basis of
their research, they proposed that clones of the bacteria also have
played a substantial
role.
