guidelines are based on Klempner, which is based on Dearborn
and no one agreed with Steere at Dearborn, especially not
Gary Wormser, who said Steere's proposal missed 85% of
the cases.

Happens

A new documentary about tick-borne disease to be discussed
next week at an educational congressional briefing is provoking
interest and lobbying by the Infectious Disease Society of America.
The September 24 educational Lyme and tick-borne disease briefing on
Capitol Hill, sponsored by The National Capital Lyme and Tick-Borne
Disease Association (NatCapLyme) will feature a clip from Andy Abraham
Wilson’s new documentary Under Our Skin. At least one congressional
office reports that members of The Infectious Diseases Society of
America (IDSA) have been scrambling to counter the film’s message with
personal visits to congressional offices. The IDSA claim that the
science isn’t there for longer treatment is effectively scrutinized in
the film, tackling that debate with interviews of IDSA and Lyme
treating doctors.



Asked about the recent IDSA visits, Monte Skall, NatCapLyme’s
Executive Director responded, “I’m pleased to think that this film may
help engage the IDSA on the science and patient issues. The film
discusses the science thoroughly, and our briefing will also have two
important presentations that should create interest in examining all
of the medical science. Equally important, though, is that the film
vividly describes the tremendous toll in human suffering and the lost
productivity to our economy created by untreated Lyme and tick-borne
disease. Lyme victims are not wedded to a doctrine of any treatment.
We just want to get well and we want the attention paid to this health
crisis that it deserves.”



Some members of Congress may be impressed by the IDSA’s
consistent position, but many others are interested in finding a real
solution for effective treatment. Yesterday, Senators Dodd, Lieberman
and Collins sent a letter to their Senate colleagues encouraging them
to attend this National Capital Lyme sponsored briefing.
