Mass Spectrum Subtraction

I'm not very familiar with mass spectras and have a question. My lab
is having a problem with one substance co-eluding with another
substance. I have been told to use the software program on the
computer to subtract one mass spectrum from another to get the desired
mass spectrum. I haven't used mass spectrum in other chemical fields
and wanted to know if this subtraction process is an accepted practice
in other fields that are identifying substances.

Subtraction is sometimes useful, but its value depends on how closely
the coeluting compounds overlap. You can make mass chromatograms for
questionable m/z's to see if they track other m/z's for each
component. There are better-developed algorithms for dealing with
coeluting compounds, such as the NIST AMDIS program and some vendor-
specific software.
