I missed it, but it looks like Jupiter is (apparently) close to the
moon. Given how bright Jupiter is, that's probably what you saw.

Went fishing again today. Fucking awesome. Leaves turning to a riot of
color, 80 degrees. Sunny. Light breeze on the lake. A few fish even
showed up to say hello once again. Such a pleasant, relaxing day.

According to our NASA/Apollo era, it's not possible to record on Kodak
film our worthless moon along with any planets other than Earth.

I find that a session of awesome fucking always makes for a good day.
I'd skip the fishing though; not my idea of fun. Are you familiar with
"Dear Diary" by the Moody Blues? This thread reminded me of it. Also of
the Facebook posts of a guy I used to work with. I still have some lamb
caught between my teeth. I'll probably take a motorcycle ride today. My
sleeves are rolled up, but they probably shouldn't be any more.

If I went to the effort, I could provide evidence to the contrary, as I'm
sure I've taken pics of the moon with a planet, using Kodak film. Asking
evidence from Guth is a bit off though.

The Moody Blues sucked ball. Kind of gay music if you ask me.

The digital camera evidence wouldn't counter the specific claim though.
Maybe he's claiming that NASA made an untenable claim specific to Kodak.
I have no clear idea how his delusions work.

Unfortunately, the best I can find in Pan is to "score" down his posts,
so they show up with the score background in black. Oddly, this ends up
looking a *lot* like the posts I score up, which are in blue. I've used
newsreaders before that let me automatically hide/delete posts by
particular authors, and I think they even blocked responses to those
authors, but I don't remember what readers they were or why I stopped
using them. Anyway, sometimes it's fun to see what some raving lunatic
says.

Usenet, at least sci.skeptic and talk.origins (the two I
frequent most often), is mainly about entertainment,
although t.o can also be educational due to the number of
professionals and knowledgeable amateurs who post there.

Lots of amateurs have obtained quality color images of our moon along
with other planets within the exact same frame of view and exposure
including our physically dark moon (no PhotoShop involved for sneaking
in those planets). However, the NASA/Apollo era was never even
capable of capturing any such images of our moon along with a vibrant
Venus that was extremely nearby on two of their missions (not ever
from orbit nor from any part of the physically dark surface). In
fact, even the highly reflective and deeply colorful Earth was usually
recorded on Kodak film as rather pastel and otherwise unable to offer
any significant planetshine as to illuminating those many deeply
shadowed areas with its intensely bluish hue.

The physically dark moon is not actually monochromatic nor UV inert:
Moon’s natural surface colors are those of all the perfectly natural
minerals as they unavoidably react to the visible and UV spectrum, as
only better viewed with having their natural color/hue saturation
cranked up, as otherwise there’s no intentionally false or artificial
colors added to either of these two examples.
http://spaceweather.com/submissions/pics/e/Ehsan-Rostamizadeh-fac_1346444660.jpg
http://www.spaceweather.com/swpod2007/23may07/Domenico-Licchelli-Saturn_Moon220507_1179916571.jpg?PHPSESSID=1u8lcvk5g1ip4dnmol44vuaf43

Oddly the NASA/Apollo cold-war era and their nifty rad-hard Kodak
version of our physically dark and paramagnetic moon that’s giving off
considerable amounts of its sodium as well as helium and a few other
vapors, is apparently offering us the one and only off-world location
that becomes more inert as well as more reflective and oddly
monochromatic by the closer we get to it, and otherwise any planet
other than Earth simply can’t be recorded within the same FOV(frame of
view) as having the horizon of that naked moon included (regardless of
the FOV direction or use of any given lens, as well as not even
possible when using the world’s best film and optics along with a
polarized optical filter to reduce the local surface glare doesn’t
seem to help).

So, how is it that amateurs as restricted to observing from Earth can
consistently accomplish a way better job of recording our physically
dark moon along with other planets (including those pesky colors of
their natural geology/minerals), and our NASA/Apollo era as having all
the right stuff always has squat to offer?

Except digital imaging has several DB/f-stops of superior DR to that
of any film we know of, though apparently the NASA/Apollo era of Kodak
film was somehow made or forced into being far superior to even the
best of modern digital imaging. Go figure.

Sadly, you and others of your kind can't afford the social or

They're everywhere, from what I've seen. We used to have a wonderful
assortment at rec.org.mensa, drawn to the delusion that smart people
would read their ravings, I believ. I saw many in alt.support.cancer,
though most of those were at least on topic.

BTW, I think I've figured out Guth's angle. He posted elsethread, and it
looks like another "moon landing fake" bit. Ho hum. The moon landing,
JFK's assassination, atomic power, and all sorts of other things are
fake. But space aliens doing anal probes on rednecks, and various
monsters around the globe, and people reading (and writing) other
people's minds, now *those* are real.

The kooks should be kept away from any and all medical groups. There
they may actually cause physical harm.

If you're not familiar with Brad Goth, he is a kook of the first water.
A 'kook for all seasons' as it were. My favorite one of his delusions
is his pant's tent regarding Venus. He believes he can see moon men
running around on Venus as well as being able to see a reservoir there.

He's got some other bizarre notion that we should move the orbit of the
moon....The fucking MOON!

And in alt astronomy his insanity is accepted with open arms. Painus
leads the Kook Parade(tm) with Bert, AA, Goth, BJ and a host of others
too numerous to mention.

It's a hoot!

LOL!

Oh ya, Painus has some weird medical condition with his groin area which
apparently requires Viagra to resolve, and Goth has some weird
anal/fecal fetish which he mentions from time to time.

No surprise; I even encountered loons in one of the groups

Your obsessions (including your constant use of such idiotic
abbreviations as the above) pretty much say it all, and it's
difficult to *not* be amused at your various antics.

Oh, and BTW...

Hitler wasn't an oligarch, he was a dictator. There *is* a
difference, y'know; the common definition of "oligarch"
refers to a member of a small, wealthy elite, usually
business-related, which collectively control a society.

No, I'd say it's our ability to actually understand reality,
as contrasted with those (you may know one or two) who
attempt to twist it by the use of selected "facts" while
ignoring those which don't fit their preconceptions.

Absolutely true. I am now retired so I split my time between conking
kooks on the head and fishing. I try to squeeze in a movie every now
and then as well.

Sometimes the movies disappoint. Sometimes the fish don't bite.
But there are ALWAYS kooks to be had.

I agree, but with unmoderated groups there's not much you can do. I have
two next-door neighbors who are chiropractors, one semi-retired and the
other practicing. I don't know about the practicing one, but the semi-
retired has told me all about some of his deusional pseudo-science
beliefs. As far as I know, nobody stops these people from seeing
"patients" in real life, performing magic on them to "cure" whatever ails
them. I'm sure some of those people are avoiding real medical treatment
in favor of the woo, and come to harm because of it.

I'd forgotten about Guth's Venus bit. I mostly ignore his posts, but my
favorite loon hasn't been posting much lately. Sometimes I wonder if one
or more of these guys are actually quite sane, and just making up stuff
for laughs. But somehow, it just seems unlikely that anyone would be
able to invent such delusions and stick with them.
I used to be really into astronomy (got the mag, built a scope, etc.),
but not so much lately. Even so, I think it would just make me a bit sad
to go to a group specifically for astronomy, and find it so polluted with
loons. Shouldn't they be in alt.astrology, or alt.aliens, or something
like that instead? Groups based on science should be restricted to those
interested in actual science, not silly made-up pretend-science. But
again, as unmoderated groups they're pretty much open to all. Moderated
groups have their own set of problems.

I belong to several professional online forums where it's pretty much
all business. But if you want to get a look at abnormal human psychology
and have some laughs, usenet is the place to go.

Pretty much the same here, but living near Phoenix means
that I have to drive quite a ways to do any stream fishing.
At least I manage to make a few multi-day trips to either
Sedona or the Payson area a few times per year. I'd rather
be in Pennsylvania, but my wife's arthritis doesn't deal
well with cold.

Unfortuantely too true.

Has she tried DMSO?

Unfortunate for YOU maybe...Not for me!

I prefer to not use industrial solvents as "medicine". Read
up a bit (not hype like the HGH crap) on how DMSO acts and
what it can do and you might be surprised; it does an
excellent job of carrying *anything* which happens to be on
your skin into your body. A good place to start:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimethyl_sulfoxide

Probably great under controlled conditions; not so much for
uncontrolled home use. IMHO of course, and YMMV.

Fortunate that they're amusing to both of us; unfortunate
that they exist.

I have used DMSO in the past with some success. This after visiting many
doctors for a 'pinched nerve' in my neck. I became so despondent
with pain that I went against my nature and actually saw a chiropractor
after the orthopedic doc could do nothing. Guy cracked my neck which
felt better for about 1/2 hour and the pain returned now double.
Finally a colleague of mine in Florida sent me up some DMSO with
instructions to only apply it after a shower and he even included an
eyedropper for it's application (said not to rub it on skin).

This stuff was like the water from Lourdes to me.

In about 2-3 weeks I was better.

Coincidence? Maybe. But nothing else worked.

Very, very difficult to find any doctors who will discuss DMSO.

When you see that a lifetime supply is $9.95 you see why.

Sounds like you had good results (and exercised appropriate
caution, although I'd have sterilized the skin with alcohol
before using it), but I've read enough about problems,
potential and observed, that I'm still reluctant.

I discussed it with my doctor, which is where I got quite a
bit of the info I was able to research later.

Obviously not the same doctors who prescribe aspirin for
various things, from chronic pain to heart attack
prevention. They're not all greedy jerks.
