Do not go gentle into real understanding of GTR,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage and bluster against the understanding of GTR.
Though wise men at their end know ignorance is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into real science.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage and bluster against the understanding of GTR.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage and bluster against the understanding of GTR.
And you, fool Potter, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce blusters, I pray.
Do not go gentle into real understanding of GTR.
Rage and bluster against the understanding of GTR.
Did someone say:
"The General Relativity Cult are circling the wagons?"
A word to the wise Wormley.
Don't give up your day job,
and plan on writing poetry for a living.
Sam did convince me of one thing with
the "rage and bluster" in his poom.
I will not waste my time trying to gain a "real understanding"
(Hypnotizing myself to see things that are not there.)
in astrology, mind reading, time travel, worm holes,
and other things that waste time, money and minds.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
(On General Relativity and bad poetry.)

What words these are I think I know,
He blathers about GR though,
He will not read these words I fear,
Preferring to rage on it seems
All other posters think its queer,
To stop and read no meaning here,
Between the lines I read the words
And understand they're laced with fear
They often reply with a shake
To ask if there is some mistake
The only other sound's the sweep
Of the wind o'er the head of the flake
The salesman's lonlely, lost and asleep,
And GR is too hard to read
Miles to go before you see
Miles to go before you see.

I am pleased to see that Puddleduck
continues to be a faithful reader of my posts,
and that he tries to emulate my poetry.
Whose words these are I think I know,
He uses paranoiac handles, and blabbers so.
He will not heed my words I fear,
he's doomed to remain a childless queer.
Here's hoping some day he'll get a job,

It appears that "The_Man <me_so_hornee"

that the thread
"The General Relativity gang are circling the wagons."
is one of the most active threads in sci.physics,

because Wormley was "Circling the wagons."
Maybe, I should explain my posts so that the dumb

Of course, it may be that "The_Man <me_so_hornee"

Of course, it may also be that "The_Man <me_so_hornee"

The "me so horny" reference is another one, alas, that you are stupid

He is a retired salesman who has spent his entire life selling

because he sold stuff to people, he understands how that stuff works.
My mostly-complete physics degree trumps his god-knows-how-many years

Tom's "schtick" is to demand pictures/names off people - as a way of running
away from his own lack of believability
No, Tom's "schtick" is to try to get the
roaches and rats to come out from under the woodwork
so folks can see what they really are.
Note for example,
that most of the sociopaths, flamers, spammers,
and Internet trash are annonymous cowards
who use handles like:
"Sacred keeper of the Hollow Sphere"
"Art Deco", "The_Man", etc.
Openness goes a long way toward
forcing sociopaths to act in a moral, civilized, honest way.
The government, Yahoo, Google and the ISPs
know who the sociopaths are,
too bad they do not make this information public,
as it would go a long way toward cleaning up the system.
--
Tom Potter
*** Time Magazine Person of the Year 2006 ***
The question is
NOT where you got the idea,
but why you use the handle and email address:
"The_Man" <me_so_h...@yahoo.com>
Why not use your real name,
like honest, civilized folks do?
Gisse makes a good point when he points out that
although I taught at the seminar, college, high school,
service school, and tech rep levels,
I also sold instrumentation for a few years
for Hewlett-Packard.
And considering that I consulted on the
instrumentation of many scientific experiments,
such as attempts to measure gravity waves,
and was in business with the head of the
physics department at Washington University,
and was friends with JFK's Science Advisor,
and other foremost scientists and technical people,
I suspect that I know a little more about
the politics, funding, value, uses of, and limits of science,
than a high school graduate from Alaska.
Now here is my "argument" about "gravity"
that bends Gisse and other members of
the General Relative Cult
all out of shape:
After Newton's model,
there were immediate and rapid advances
in mechanics, astronomy, etc.
After Maxwell's model
there were immediate and rapid advances
in chemistry, electricity, etc.
After Watson's and Crick's DNA model
there were immediate and rapid advances
in medicine, genetics, animal husbandry,
the history of the Earth and Mankind, etc.
I noticed in the news in the last few days,
that the DNA model was recently used to develop
a new form of rice that will prevent 500,000 children
from going blind EVERY YEAR,
and was used to convert blood types,
and that people with rare blood types will have a safe
supply of blood in the future,
and was used to prove 10,000 accused rapists were innocent,
and was used to determine that chickens are closely related to
dinosaurs,
and to possibly save Anna Nicole Smith's baby from becoming shark
bait.
As can be seen Newton's, Maxwell's and the DNA model
are being used daily **in the free market** in "fruitful" ways,
while as can be seen from the recent Gravity Probe B reports,
General Relativity continues to waste billions of the taxpayer's
dollars
on experiments designed to rationalize it,
using numerous Classical Physics hacks to compensate for
electric and magnetic effects, friction, windage,
metal creep, pressure, the atmosphere, nearby masses, etc.
With a record like this,
it is not surprising that the General Relativity Cult is
desperate to make the false claim
that GTR was essential to the GPS system.
Face the facts,
General Relativity is a religion adopted by Atheists
to fantasize about things beyond man's capacity
to experience in time and space.
General Relativity gives insecure Atheists
a model (Religion) through which to
experience infinite time and space (Heaven).
(Worm holes, space warps, time travel, black holes, etc.)
Now I don't want to take away the fantasies
of the General Relativity Cultists,
as they need them to feel secure,
I just think there should be a separation between
Church and State,
and that the taxpayers should
not be forced to pay billions of dollars
to rationalize the General Relativity Religion.

How do we know Tom Potter is your REAL name, coward?
As can be determined by any person
with average intelligence,
I have been posting using my real name for over ten years on the
Internet, and many more years before that on CompuServe, Delphi, AOL,
Prodigy, Genie, etc.
And there are many pictures of me and my family
on my web sites and blogs,
and if that isn't enough to convince some dunce,
they can download my Physics Tutorial,
which is copyrighted in my name,
and if that isn't enough to convince some dunce,
they can send money to my Paypal account.
It's pretty easy to spot the cowardly,
low-self-esteem neurotics, they use handles like
"Sacred keeper of the Hollow Sphere",
and they spam the newsgroups with inane posts
attacking folks in an effort to get a cheap ego trip.
I can't understand why the antisocial misfits
give up trying to **earn** ego trips,
and define themselves as permanent losers,
with their anti-social behavior.
There are an infinite numbers of ways
to earn ego trips, and one does not have
to become anti-social because they haven't succeeded
in the usual ways. (Love, business, athletics, art, etc.)
Only if they are smarter than you. Shit, I forgot, EVERYBODY's smarter
than you. My bad.

Because I don't want some lunatic piece of shit kook from the
Internet, like you, to pull a Cho on me. If some loser-retired

doing, but that would give me a lot of unnecessary hassle.

I love how Pitter is throwing up a big sign saying "Kick me". Perhaps living in
China for too long has made him forget about issues such as free speech.

Potter, your "Physics Tutorial" is a piece of shit.
The content is physically wrong!
I pity your former students and hope no serious damage was done
because you don't know _anything_ about physics.
> I also sold instrumentation for a few years
> for Hewlett-Packard.
>

Bullshit you did. Selling equipment is not _consulting_, it is
salesmanship.
Your abject inability to understand general relativity is evidence
enough that you never did one bit of technical work for a
gravitational wave observatory.
[snip rest of whining about 'taxpayers']
You aren't even an American taxpayer, you intellectually dishonest
piece of shit. You are living in China, off of money that you earned
selling to the very scientists which you repeatedly criticize. If you
had any moral backbone, you would return the money - or better yet,
you would have never have taken the jobs in the first place.
I used to believe in the tooth fairy, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny,
"gravity waves" and General Relativity,
but as I gained more experience,
I begin to see that people create all kinds of fictions for various
reasons,
some good, some bad.
It is interesting to see that Gisse,
a high school graduate from Alaska,
who wants his parents and the taxpayers
to buy him a credential
that will give him a ticket to live off the taxpayers
for the rest of his life,
and not have to produce anything of value
calls me "intellectually dishonest"
because I point out that General Relativity
is a Religion, and a Tower of Babel,
that generates more heat than light,
and like all religions, wastes time, money and minds,
on pursuits beyond man's capacity to ever experience
in time and space.
Things like heaven, hell, time travel, worm holes,
space warping to other worlds, black holes,
the beginning and the end of the universe, etc.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
When I read a "The_Man" post,
I am always reminded of the movie where
Rodney Dangerfield is cleaning the cages of monkeys
used in a communications experiment.
He scrunched his nose and said:
"I think they should first teach them how to go the the bathroom."
It seems to me that the first things that should be taught
to PhD candidates is how to spell,
and how to conduct themselves is a rational, civilized manner,
and how to go to the bathroom.
Most schools won't sell a PhD credential
to a person that reflects badly on the school,
as it would make the school look bad,
and they would have to discount their fees.
Maybe "The_Man" got his PhD credential out of a Cracker Jack box.

I am surprised to see that Sam Wormley
calls a graphics-oriented "Physics Tutorial"
that develops a unique " Physical Properties Chart",
that shows all the relationships between the physical properties
much as the Periodic Chart shows the relationships
between the elements is "a piece of shit."
Apparently, Sam is not aware that
Maxwell observed that a measurement
consisted of two parts, a standard quantity,
and the number of "units" of the standard quantity
that it took to quantize the measurement,
and that Maxwell went on to determine
that all of the physical properties observed ,
and all of the new electrical properties being observed by
people like Faraday, could be defined in terms of
three so-called "fundamental properties"
and a couple of constants,
Maxwell used time, del factor (Three-dimensional space),
and mass as his three "fundamental properties"
and used the permeability and permittivity of space
as his constants.
Today we call Maxwell's model "Dimensional Analysis",
and it is the standard against which ALL models of physics
MUST be measured. If a model does not fit
Maxwell's dimensions, it is not physics.
Maths are tools,
Units are politics.
Dimensional Analysis is physics.
I am sad that Sam and many people
have been conditioned to think that
a particular math expression,
or some laundry list of math expression,
is physics,
and that "Dimensional Analysis"
is "a piece of shit."
As the old saying goes:
"To a man a hammer,
everything looks like a nail."
"To a farm boy with a shovel,
everything looks like "shit".
You were more naive as a kid the my sister and me, Potter. Now as
to GTR... what a wonderfully productive theory of gravitation that
has turned out to be. We can apply it to satellite clocks and it
predicts the correct offsets required for high accuracy.

Potter is wrong again--GTR is a *scientific theory* of gravitation
that is falsifiable as is any scientific theory. There has never
been an observation that has contradicted a prediction of GTR. It
is a wonderfully fruitful tool.
GTR has directly contributed to a $30B+ industry, creating a global

Let me give you a little advice Sam.
Don't believe everything you read or hear that is
written or spoken by someone on the taxpayer dole,
or speaking from a religion or a government point of view.
If your sources possessed powerful, esoteric knowledge,
they would be using it to make money
in the free market like Gates, and the Google and Yahoo boys.
when he points out that "selling" the public
on wasting billions of the taxpayers dollars
to rationalize General Relativity
was one hell of a sales job.
Can you imagine spending so much money
rationalizing a model that like religion
models things beyond man's capacity to ever
experience in time and space. Things like
the beginning and end of the universe, time travel,
worm holes, black holes, warping through space, etc?
I doubt that any used car salesman could pull that off.
I bet a lot of lazy, insecure con men
afraid to compete in the free market,
would like to get on that gravy train.
What do you think Gisse?
Would you like the taxpayers to support you
for the rest of your life, after your parents
quit footing the bill?
A lot of lazy, insecure guys
who were afraid of the free market
used to become monks and such.
I bet it was much cheaper for the people
to support those monks,
than it does to support the General Relativity Priests,
considering that they insist on spending billions of dollars
trying to rationalize their religion,
and they spend millions holding seminars all over the Earth.
Too bad we can't put them up in monastic cells,
and have them beg for their meals.
It is interesting that you understand as little about "free speech" as
you do about physics. You are a "triple-threat": you don't know
physics, you don't know civics, and you don't know math!

It is amazing that "a senile old man" like me,
has most of the low-self-esteem sociopaths in sci.physics,
crawling out from under the wood work,
following me around, reading my every word,
and getting all bent out of shape,
because I expose their immaturity, ignorance,
and sociopathic behavior.
Note for example, the GTR Cultists in this thread
are foaming at the mouth because I pointed out that
General Relativity is a Tower of Babel
that wastes time, money and minds on such
pursuits as time travel, worm holes, gravity waves,
rubber rulers and clocks, etc.
and that after Newton's model,
there were immediate and rapid advances
in mechanics, astronomy, etc.
After Maxwell's model
there were immediate and rapid advances
in chemistry, electricity, etc.
After Watson's and Crick's DNA model
there were immediate and rapid advances
in medicine, genetics, animal husbandry,
the history of the Earth and Mankind, etc.
And here we are, 100 years after General Relativity
and it continues to generate more hype and heat
than light and advances.
One would think that if the GTR Cult
possessed powerful knowledge,
that they would enter the free market
like the guys from Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Intel,
Texas Instruments, Apple, etc. and make billions of dollars,
rather than sucking up billions of dollars.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
And as can be seen by the posts of the
General Relativity Cultists:
"A wasted mind is a terrible thing."

Bluster on, Potter, bluster some more!
Don't forget hes a pathetic little salesman expat who is now living in
China who spent his entire life selling technology to scientists.
Today's crayon color is "fucking hypocrite".
Regarding Gisse's question:
"C'mon Tom - let's see the fruits of your labor. In all your life,
have
you produced one tangible product? Have you done even one useful thing
that you can point to and be proud of?"
Other than teaching at the seminar,
college, high school, military school, and tech rep levels,
and introducing digital computers to electronic instrumentation,
and educating industry and government to use computers in control
and data collections systems,
and being one of the first computer store owners,
and one of the first writers of software for microcomputers,
and starting on of the first companies to collect and process
data via the telephone, and being the first to copyright
what is now known as "Data mining", etc.
I suppose the thing that I am most proud of,
is that I have exposed General Relativity as a Tower of Babel
that wastes time, money and minds on such
pursuits as time travel, worm holes, gravity waves,
warping through space, rubber rulers and clocks, etc.
For example:
"After Newton's model,
there were immediate and rapid advances
in mechanics, astronomy, etc.
After Maxwell's model
there were immediate and rapid advances

Here we are, 100 years after General Relativity
and it continues to generate more hype and heat
than light and advances.
And of course, I am proud that
I have called attention to the fact
that a small gang has a long history of
instigating conflict and war for power and riches.
For example, the gang instigated and profited
from the Class Wars of the 1900's,
and they are instigating and profiting from the
Religious Wars of the 2000's.
And considering that my Pappy used to say:
"A man should be judged by the enemies he makes.",
I am sure that my Pappy would be proud of
me on this score., as the enemies I have made,
are members of, or fellow travelers with,
the War-for-Profit Gang,
and are General Relativity Charlatans and Cultists.
Considering the Gisse is a member of the General Relativity Cult,
I pose the same question to him:
Although General relativity has been hyped as
the greatest thing since sliced bread
for almost one hundred years,
what has it produced that General relativity Charlatans and Cultists
"can point to and be proud of?"
No doubt, as Gisse does not comprehend
how closed systems, broadband systems and correlators, work,
he will parrot the false claim that cultists have been brainwashed
to,
that it was essential to the GPS system.

WRONG. No there weren't. The DNA model that Watson and Crick pretty

GR explains SR. Special relativity is a FUNDAMENTAL part of QM,
especially as applied to chemistry. We have excellent, widely used
computer software that predicts chemical properties of novel materials
for biology, nanoscience, neurtoscience, pharamcy, based upon SR.
Relativistic effects become important for "heavy" atoms. In your care,
you have a "catalytic converter". The catalytic agent is a layer of
platinum. To understand how platinum catalyses the reactions that it
does, one NEEDS SR.
Similarly for use of Pt in cisplatin, a very important anti-cancer
drug. Anywhere in technology we ever use gold, platinum, paladium,
uranium, radium, radon, xenon, iodine, (to name but a few), SR is
important.
Therefore, GR is technologically of EXTREME importance.

relativity to CHEMISTRY is YOUR problem. But it shows that your "what

There is no doubt that I am superior in many ways,

It isn't.
1) Read the spec. If an idiot retired 'engineer' can think of it in 5
minutes of musing, satellite designers over a period of 30 years
probably thought of it at least once.
2) You haven't done _jack shit_ quantitatively. You are simply making

You have not shown it to be a major factor. In fact, you haven't shown

Of course you have no idea that scientists who work with relativity
have and continue to tear down and rebuild relativity from the ground
up on a regular basis. Your spew implies that scientists don't
understand relativity - which is laughably stupid, much like
everything else you say.

You say you are surrounded by losers, this may be true. Worryingly for you,
despite this, you still look by far one of the bigger losers on

You misunderstand "litotes" = understatement for effect. Chemistry is
built on SR, and has been for 80 years.

Do you mean "Sommerfeld"?

But Bohr's hydrogen atom has not been used for 80 years, since it gave
the right answers ONLY for hydrogen, mostly by coincidence. It failed
miserably (kind of like YOU) for helium, and anything heavier. Nobody
cares about the Bohr atom.
>

Who cares? Relativistic effects are most dominant in CORE electrons,
which are unlikely to ionize anyway.
Fitting of ionization potentials is not a test of SR, since these
follow a very complicated pattern, that depends on numerous variables
other than just the velocity of the electrons.

As I wrote in my post on April 23, 2007
"Special Relativity indicates that
delta energy = delta mass * C^2
where delta mass = mass(0) * gamma
where gamma = 1 / ( 1-beta^2)^.5
where beta = velocity / C
As the
ionization energy = electron charge * ionization voltage
why is it that one gets a better statistical fit using
energy = electron mass * (beta * C)^2 / 2
Where beta = fine structure constant and
beta * C is the effective electron velocity.
(Newton's old mass times velocity squared energy)
than one gets by using
energy = gamma * electron mass * C^2
Where gamma = 1 / (1-fine structure constant^2)^.5
(Special Relativity energy)
(Note that gamma = 1/cosine(A) - 1
where cosine(A) is the cosine of the angle whose sine is velocity(A)/
C )
In other words:
does
ionization energy = electron charge * ionization voltage = electron
mass * (Beta* C)^2 / 2
or
ionization energy = electron charge * ionization voltage = gamma *
electron mass * C^2
or
what
??????????
I have listed the ionization potentials for hydrogen-like atoms
below,
so you can verify this for yourself.
I listed the average number of neutrons in the atoms,
as I found that I can get a quasi-perfect ionization voltage fit
if I take the proton and neutron masses into account,
and use beta^2 rather than gamma.
Note that the effective electron velocity for a given hydrogen atom
= FSC * C * HARMONIC
HARMONIC is the term I use for the ratio between
protons and electrons in a hydrogen-like atom.
Note that a single proton effectively interacts with
HARMONIC amounts of electrons.

DOES THE INERTIA OF A BODY DEPEND UPON ITS ENERGY-CONTENT?
http://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/einstein/E_mc2/www/
Probably because the ionization energy depends also on the Coulomb
potential between the electron and the nucleus, which isn't included
in either of your two formulae. You don't realize that the electron
certainly doesn't have a constant velocity (more accurately, speed) in
the atom, except in Bohr's very antiquated version.
You forget that Bohr was one of the great pioneers of QM, which
totally superseded this mess.

Neither. You seem confused about the unit of "electron volts", which
is a unit of ENERGY, not voltage. One can derive its magnitude
quickly, knowing that the energy 1 eV is the mass of an electron 9.109
x 10^31 kg, and the charge 1.6 x 10^-19 C, to get the conversion to
joules, obviously a unit of energy.
I think (although it's hard to be sure, you write so haphazardly),
that you are finding the relativistic energy equivalent for an
electron moving at a certain velocity. Sadly, you don't even know
enough chemistry to understand something as simple as IP. :-(

The potentials can be closely predicted (for hydrogen-like atoms) by a
simple formula, the Rhydberg formula.

Please cite one peer-reviewed article in chemistry or physics which
makes this claim.
The IP's for hyhdrogen-like atoms are trivial to compute, and to
compute to better accuracy than you have here.
First of all, there are two DIFFERENT ionization potentials, adiabatic
and vertical. There is no confusion for atoms, so these are vertical
IP.
The electronic energy is quickly computed by the Schroedinger
equation, with a relativistic correction for the MASS of the electron.
The electronic energy of the remaining ion is, of course, 0.
The IP is equal to the electronic energy (again, ONLY for hydrogenic
atoms)
To calculate IP's for heavier atoms is much more tricky.

He didn't forget anything. Since GPS has been beat into the ground,
and you kooks are STILL unable to understand that GR is essential to
GPS, I decided to see if you could be stupid about somenthing ELSE
that you are completely ignorant about.

You rather thought many thinkgs that are cmpletely wrong, so why
should this be different?

If there is stupidity about it, it is mine, not Sam's. On the other
hand, SR was built into theoretical chemistry very long ago. I suspect
you even less about theoretical chemistry than you do about physics,
or English.

"cause a waist".... Yes, it caused the waists of "wasted" pantywaists
like you to be trimmed.

Does one put a belt around a time "waist"

Fuck off . you insignificant worthless little old Nazi cretin
[...]
Gold is yellow and Mercury is liquid because of relativistic effects.
He has had this explained to him before, and he doesn't understand.
I have pointed out the fine structure corrections in spectra are
because of relativity - he doesn't understand. I could derive them for
him, but he wouldn't understand.
I sense a pattern here...
I didn't compute the ionization potentials.
I just posted the data so that you or anyone
who thinks that gamma does a better job of
computing ionization potentials than beta^2 / 2
can compute it for themselves.
And I just pointed out that you must
take the number of neutrons in an atom into account
to get the best fit.
