In most situations,
YOU are a better navigation system
than the GPS System.

GPS receivers have several disadvantages,
battery life, can't see the screen in bright light,
can't get a fix, waiting for a fix, etc.

You generally know where you are,
or can soon find a reference point.

Here's what I have found to be the best way to navigate.

1. Load GoogleEarth,
and place a "Placemark" at each location of interest.

2. Save the placemarks to a "KML" file.

3. Download and use the free "GPSBabel" program
to convert the KML file to an "Oziexplorer" WPT file.

4. Use the shareware version of "GoogleOzi"
to capture maps of the places you visit.

Capture several maps if necessary to cover
the points of interest.

For the most flexibility make maps using the
"map", "satellite", and terrain" views,

as the "map" view lists place names,
the "satellite" view is more accurate,
and the "terrain" view is best for long range viewing.

6. Use free "img2ozf" to convert the maps
so they can be used by Oziexplorer.

7. Load the shareware version of OziExplorerCE into your PDA.
Copy the maps into the OziExplorer "MAP" directory
and copy the WPT file/files to the Oziexployer "Data" directory.

This approach eliminates the light level,
battery, and lock on problems,

as when you want to go somewhere,
you find a low light level place,
turn on your PDA, load Oziexployer
load the maps and waypoints,

zoom in and navigate around on the screen,
and decide where you want to go next.

I have Oziexployer and several GPS programs
in a windowce PDA ( With GPS chip ) , and I use Oziexployer
for navigating around, and sometimes use a GPS program
to search for nearby toilets, hotels,
provide cab drivers directions to my destination, etc.

Most of the time I navigate indoors at a store, restaurant, etc.
using "Oziexplorer" with the downloaded maps
and places of interest,
don't have to go outside in the heat and cold
and wait for a fix. ( And run down my battery. )

Well, but GPS wasn't really invented to tell anybody where they
are,
it was invented to clue navy idiots in on the simple fact of life,
that this is longer CONUS, it's the 21st Century, UAVs, Drones,
Phalanx,
Digital Books, Digital Terran Mapping, Data Fusion, Blue Ray, HDTV,
Home Broadband,
Holographics, On-Line Publishing, Rapid-Prototyping. Self-
Assembling Robots,
Distributed Processing Software, Self-Replicating Machines, and
Post GM-nomics.

That's probably because you're a fucking moron.

The batteries in my GPS last all day. It's perfectly readable in
sunlight, and it gets a fix within 30 seconds of turning it on cold,
five seconds when it's warmed up.

All I have to do is turn it on to tell me exactly where I am, versus
your idiotic seven-step procedure.

What, are you just overcome sometimes with being a bonehead and you
feel the need to share?

LOL...best laugh I have had all day.
FYI...there are MANY GPS systems on the market that do not suffer from the
items you list. As for indoor "navigation", use any of the map sites off
the internet to do your planning, and then use the GPS to NAVIGATE THERE.

I am surprised to see that Uncle Al,
who seems to be a reasonably bright chemical technician,
and an active member of Mensa,

did not comprehend that my post was about folks who travel
using their personal PDAs and GPS receivers to navigate about,

and was NOT about Ocean navigation and
scientific, government and military use
of the GPS System.

I might point out that Mensa is an organization whose
"only requirement for membership is that one score at or above the 98th
percentile
on certain standardized IQ tests".

It seems to me that organizations should also be founded
to cater to folks with other real and supposed genetic qualities
such as big boobs, blonde hair, big dicks, blue eyes, etc.

Observe that big boobs, blonde hair, and blue eyes
will get you more power and money faster
than scoring high "on certain standardized IQ tests".

I know a lot of guys that score high
"on certain standardized IQ tests"
that can be controlled like a robot by a big busted blonde.

I might point out to my pal "Klaus Schadenfreude'

I might point out to "Wayne" that before I take a trip,
I use GoogleOzi to create satellite images, maps, and
terrain images, and I load waypoints of subway stops, train stops,
and places of interest, and load this data into my PDA and GPS.
I find I rarely have to use the GPS which drains batteries faster that a
PDA.

Plus I find navigating with "Winterface" and "OziExplorer"
much faster and easier to use.

I push the button to turn the PDA on
and that loads "Winterface",

I "slide to unlock", tap "OziExplorer" with my finger,
and use my fingernail to zoom and move the maps around.

As I know where I am 99.44% of the time

The atomic clock is allso gaining or lossing time depending on your
motions.
From a set place ..set the time..
minus the angle from the pole the diferance in the two clocks is how far
you are around the planet.
The clock gains time or looses time as you travel around the world.
just like a gps sig is the difeance in the time of two points.

maybe 100 miles north of guam.

Not that I said that about an ungarded uninhabited tropical voucanic

You nead 5 bucks ?? for real ?
gold 1100 an oz and this fucker in the city of seattle is broak ?? WTF
MAN ?
OK the gold ore from the seattle mine google images and look at the
rock..go find 20 pound rocks or any hand sise rock the same color.
The rocks are evrywhere ,, pick up the gold ore rocks .. 1000 rocks 20
pound each will be 1 million bucks.
Test the first rock to make a grand..
take the hammer and crush it up its easy..
powder it then dump in 1/2 gal maratic and hyrochoric acid. $ 3 at
store.
Then pann it for gold by mixing it with water and stiring it up..
walk down the street and get 1 rock..20 pound seattle gold ore ..1 oz
gold in 30 minuts work.
Platinum is in the sufide water deposits that look like quartz but dont
fizz or react with acid.

Hunt for rocks that are a tad darker then the gold ore color and colect
the plantinum rocks too. The platinum rocks you just smash and pann on
sight.
gold panners dont colect ore rocks and work ore for gold..they hunt
for gold from gold or rocks under river rocks.
They are stupid.
Nead 1000 bucks evry time you pick up a 20 pound rock ? Homes put them
in the front yards and have no clue.
57 oz per ton gold ore ...
nice looking rock.. you dont have the gold strip mine but can see the
rock. The top side of that strip mine is all over the place.
A rock in evry yard river has a rock that color evry foot.
smash that rock and gold pann it.

All I want is for you ( TJ ) to keep your word, just this once.
I don't need 5 bucks, but that'd be a start, wouldn't it ?

I can't believe you can't send 5 bucks anonymously.
I'm not going to do anything you ask until you either
start keeping your word and/or stop being anonymous.

No it wont.

You have no money. Nothing you say even orbits the truth. You are so
locked into your bizarre fantasy life its possible you have even begun
to believe it. It must really make you sad when you realise that you
dont have all this wealth and shiny baubles. It must hurt even more when
you realise you are freak with no friends and that you are mocked
internationally.

I really do feel sorry for you, now pay the Relf his money.

Finding an oz is super easy.. pick up the bright orange rocks with the
back lines.
smash them up and mix it with water and shake.
20 pound rock per oz.
You can use acid and disolve the rock ..
go crush a few samples and see what you get.
Look fo rocks that look like the gold ore from the mines.
The white rock with siver specks is platinum
crush and pann in water by shaking.
fuck,,where you live you can walk down to a ceek and pic up a gold ore
ock and cush it and go cash it in and have a grand evry time.

I guess that depends on a lot of different things. What are you here
for?

OH! You were joking. Sorry.

In that case, the answer is definitely maybe. What with all the cross-
posting to semi-related groups and all, the odds change, but I'd be
totally unwilling to give an over/under.
