Hi !

what about the so called "boxy galaxies " ?
See e.g the square galaxy in:

http://ej.iop.org/images/1538-3881/121/2/808/Full/fg7.t.gif

Any explanation in the framework of current astrophysics?

Thank you in advance

No explanation, but a possible hypothesis would be the intersection of
two spiral arm galaxies viewed at an angle oblique to both. This
arrangement could produce parallelogram type images.

This hypothesis is a companion to the double spiral arm galaxies
hypothesis which proposes that double spiral galaxies which are far
more common are the intersection of two simple spiral arm galaxies.

I can not cite any reference on these thoughts because as far as I am
aware the proposals are original to me.

In considering these observations I was unable to formulate any method
by which double spirals could form naturally, whereas supposing an
intersection or apparent overlap of simple spiral arms was reasonable.

Thank you Anon. So, it might be a prospectic effect.
Another possibility might be related to the square-shaped
stellar orbits of the 4:1 resonance, see e.g.:

J.R.D. Lépine et al.:
" The spiral structure of the galaxy revealed
by CS sources and evidence for the 4:1 resonance "

arXiv: 1010.1790.1 [astro-ph.GA]
8 Oct. 2010

the abstract says:

" we identify a square-shaped sub structure " ecc ecc

Opinions?
