Because the first moon landing was apparently one of the most watched, if
not the most watched, bits of tv up to that point.

A hot summer day, pictures that practically look like an ultrasound, no
color then, and they land and take a nap or something. I remember going
to sleep for a bit, I was only nine, and then woke up for the walk on the
mooon, or so I remember.

There's a line about it in Don McLean's "American Pie".

There's also a Diane Lane movie (which I did sort of watch in French on
tv) that takes place during that period. She's off at a summer camp with
the kids in upstate New York, her husband is stuck in the city fixing tv
sets and can't get up that weekend because everyone wants their tv set
fixed for the Big Event (so she has a fling with the local hippie). But
it shows the people at the camp all gathered together to watch the even,
it shows the hippie in his bus with a portable tv (now a collector's item)
they start watching it but get distracted.

It was a time when people tried to shoot photos of their tv set, to record
the event, no video recorders commonly available back then. You could do
it, but you had to adjust properly.

I think the even is also well covered by The Dish, which I didn't see on
tv and only saw last year when I finally found it on VHS tape at a garage
sale. It's a different spin on the same event, though no nudity or affair
in that one.

A lot of times since then people have watched tv at the same time, but I
think too many of those times, it's been for something bad.

The group charter for one.

Then there's the implication that nothing is off-topic because everything in
the world has "been seen on TV" at some point.

Then there are the other off-topic newsfroups...

The group charter and group description, which reads "The boob tube, its
history, and past and current shows", for one.

Then there are the other off-topic newsfroups to which the original was
cross-posted.

Which is where the error came in. WIthout the "a", he says the same thing
twice, "man" and "mankind" being interchangeable. But with the "a" he's
humbling, "a small step for me, a giant step for mankind". Apparently he
slipped up and forgot as he actually stepped on the moon. I don't think
it matters.

So, the first moon landing is not part of TV history?

The statement always seemed backwards to me.

If we intended to venture far beyond the moon, it should have been:
"That's one giant leap for a man, one small step for mankind."

Understandably, the emotion of the moment jumbled things.

Can you imagine being the first human to *ever* set foot on another
celestial body and not breaking forth with "Woo hoo!"?

His self control was phenomenal.

Maybe, and if so, then my comment was wrong.

O was thinking of news events, and most of them have been negative since
then when everyone was watching tv at the same time. I imagine the "We
are the World" concert or whatever it was called in the summer of 1985?
probably had a large audience. But sports if it attracts enough people
would be a positive experience rather than neagative (such as September
11th or a war).

Didn't he say something before his canned speech - about the texture
his foot felt when one foot stepped on the moon?

I'm not sure how authoritative wikipedia is. Their page on this
doesn't yet include the London opening and closing ceremonies.

Beijing opening ceremonies: Between 1 and 4 billion people, including
842 million in China. Nielsen estimates that 70% of the world's
population watched some part of the Beijing Olympics.

2006 World Cup: 715 million (according to organizer) or 260 million
(600M for "some part" of the game).

Apollo 11 landing: 530M (14% of world population)

Elvis Aloha from Hawaii: 1B people (including rerun).

2011 Cricket SEMI final: 1B

The only negative items in the list are Diana's funeral and MJ's
memorial service.

Perhaps current events items like 9/11 or Katrina don't get viewership
ratings because everyone is watching a DIFFERENT network's
transmission.

In ths cse it s. It was a maass showng all over the world in whch most
of the places on the planet that had any tv broadcast capabiliy showed
it. An esttimated 500 to 600 million people, about 12..5% of the world
populaton at the time, saw the moonlanding live. Everyone who had
access to a TV stopped what they were doing to watch.

For the first time a TV broadcast was being sent from another world.
One can argue that was the greatest TV show ever.

With such historic significance for both for history in general and to
the history of TV a clear exception can be made.

A similar argument can be said for Lee Harvey Oswald's assaasination
by Jack Ruby and th 9/11 coverage from just after the first plane hit
to when 7 WTC collapsed. Those two thhings happened on Live TV
spontaneously without any planning.
