Before I send my LCD monitor to its reward (due to failing backlight),
is there anything interesting to salvage? Any pieces of glass of
exceptional flatness, or cool polarizing films or whatever?

There a pair of polarizing films covering the front and back of
the glass panel. Getting them peeled off intact may be a challenge
though. They may not be simple linear polarizers though, possibly
combination of circular and linear.
