This used to be a pretty serious group. The deluge of spam makes me
think it is time to consider making this a moderated group. What do
others think?

Get a real newsreader, a good news provider (e.g. Supernews, now part of
Giganews), and set up some filters. I see zilch spam with my setup
(Supernews/SeaMonkey).

Cheers

My ISP used to have Supernews, but now it's something else.

Although I did see an increase in spam, it's not enough for me
to care. Half the internet is spam anyway. But I'd rather have
that than what Supernews used to do, and that was tighten their
grip so tight that they blocked legit messages as well. Although
since they were sold, that may have changed.

BTW, I like Spam. :)

Hi there,

Just joined group as previous discussions about lasers / optics were
fascinating - wasn't expecting all the spam though - maybe some
moderation would clear the air a bit.....

About me: just started out as a very amateur laser / optics hobbyist -
most of what has been previously discussed is a little over my head as
i have no working experience but i found some useful discussions from
1997(!) - anyway, hello to all!

I suspect my NSP is still doing some filtering. Different companies
do different things. Some do zero filtering. But that's where a
good news client comes in that has, ideally both black and white
lists as well as adaptive heuristics.

Personally, I see at most on occasion in any of the groups I read,
4-5 spams per day. On average I'd say it's less than 1 per day.

Welcome to the group. It can be a tad slow in here, but many lurk
waiting for the right convo to come up. There are many pros in here
as well as amateurs. All told I'd say we have enough technical
expertise to answer most questions - from basic fundamentals to
nitty gritty trade secrets.
