American Physical Society March Meeting 2003

The biggest physics meeting of the year, the American Physical Society (APS)

The spaser: a laser analog for nanotechnology

Just as a laser can fire tightly focused light at a point, a new proposed
device, the "spaser" will shoot surface plasmons (localized energy
fluctuations on the surface of materials) on a nanoscale.

Ink-jet printing creates tubes of living tissue

Three-dimensional tubes of living tissue have been printed using modified
desktop printers filled with suspensions of cells instead of ink. The work
is a first step towards printing complex tissues or even entire organs.

Six Students Named Intel Semifinalists

Nina Bai entitled her project "Synthesis and Characterization of
Well-ordered Thin Films of Decanethiolated Gold Nanoparticles." "I made
these nano-particles, which are very small particles," said Bai. "I then
made thin film from them and used various techniques and instruments to
measure the thin film and see how the particles are arranged."

Electrical Control of Electron Spin Steers Spin-Based Technologies Toward
Real World

Researchers at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) and at
the University of Pittsburgh have provided "proof of concept that quantum
spin information can be locally manipulated using high-speed electrical
circuits," according to the abstract of their paper being published
expeditiously at 2:00 p.m. Jan. 23 on the "Science Express" website, Science
Magazine's rapid portal for publication of significant research findings to
appear subsequently in print in Science.

Fastest transistor made at UI

The UI transistor has a speed of 370 gigahertz, compared with the 350 GHz
speed of the previous record holder, which was announced by IBM in November.
Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone is next at 341 GHz.

BioForce Nanosciences explores virtues of ultrasmall

BioForce Nanosciences is taking an unusual approach to developing next
generation products, at least in Ames. The company isn't into genetic
engineering. "It's kind of an interesting paradox because molecular biology
is nanotechnology from the bio side," said company founder Eric Henderson.
BioForce works on carbon-based objects that are non-biological but on a
"nano" scale.
