This conference will focus on molecularly and atomically precise research in
five specific areas: Atomic Scale Devices, Molecular Machines, Self Assembling
and Self-Adaptive Systems, Commercial Scale Devices, and Computation and
Modeling.

The first session, Atomic Scale Devices, will be presented on Friday, January
11th. We will explore the study of top-down controlled atomically precise
fabrication and devices enabled by this technology. Session Chair John Randall
will describe efforts at Zyvex Labs to develop atomically precise manufacturing
tools. Randall will suggest that atomic precision will start with nanoscale
objects and will then scale up to have a much wider impact.

As the session progresses, Leonard Grill will present some of the fantastic
science that can be done with atomic precision research tools. Philip Moriarty
will cover the science and technology of one of the primary tools used for
top-down atomic precision: the Scanning Tunneling Microscope. Joe Lyding, a
pioneer of H depassivation lithography, a technique central to many of the
efforts involving scalable atomic precision patterning, will describe that
technology and its significant spin-offs. Bob Wolkow will describe an exciting
application of this lithography, atomic scale quantum dot cellular automata
which would provide outrageously low power computing. Ezra Bussmann and Gerhard
Klimeck will describe, respectively, the experimental approach and the modeling
of atomic scale P in Si quantum computing technology. Finally, Neil Sarkar
will present an approach to dramatically scaling up the throughput of tip-based
atomic scale fabrication via smart MEMS nanopositioning scanners.

It has been 26 years since Foresight was founded: long before the discovery of
graphene, the development of quantum dots, semiconductor manufacturing
processes below the visible light diffraction limit, nanometer scale integrated
circuit features, single atom gated transistor devices, quantum computers,
mechanical bonds and molecular machines, mechanochemistry, DNA origamis and RNA
walkers, self-assembled molecularly perfect monolayers, modular self-assembling
chemical systems, and a wide variety of other nanoscale and atomic and
molecular technologies. These developments in one way or another have brought
us closer to one of Foresight's core goals: The realization of atomically and
molecularly precise processes, materials, and devices. But a lot of work
remains to be done to realize the benefits - perhaps profound - of applying
such technologies productively to real world problems on the macro scale.

This conference aims to spur progress in doing just that. We hope to see you
