My deferment ended when I graduated in 1969.

The Army worked out well for me, as it had for my father, but I've
always wondered what would have happened if I'd stayed in Air Force
ROTC. I was so nearsighted then that I couldn't see beyond the
instrument panel without glasses.

I wanted to be an experimental scientist and thought that an AF 2LT
commission would prepare me only to sell insurance. My college
roommate got one, and by next Christmas I was an E-4 in charge of 80
men and he was making coffee in the Pentagon.
