Since there seems to be some interest in wooden ships
around here...

these britons.... only them can get a major defense industry to do R&R
works on a SOL in the XXIst century...

jabs aside, is definitively not a novelty, the number of refits & repair
since completion are rather big, and hard to account in current
economical terms, no direct comparision is possible.

At least Lord Collingwood's wisdom perhaps will be put to good use, I
think. ;)

(I wonder about the inevitable ruckus with environmentalists....)

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.

This seems to be a mainly cosmetic job.

The 'knees and futocks' were replaced about 60 years ago with the wrong
sort of timber and are rotten and it looks as if they're not going to be
replaced this time.

This sounds like a 10 year contract for twenty men to replace the masts
and any rotting stuff on the exterior planking rather than a major
reconstruction programme.

So you're going to see a lot of publicity when they winch in the new
mainmast, which will look wonderful but almost certainly won't be
capable of any work.

HMS Victory will NOT be leaving harbour...

The masts have been concreted into the bottom of the dry dock for
decades!!

They are not replacing the lower sections, the upper parts have been
down for months now.

I forgot to add that they are also hollow wrought iron.

It just makes me appreciate the USS Constitution all the more.
it can still unfurl a few sails and move under wind power.

Ah, I didn't know that, thanks.

Do you know when that was done?
