What I meant by "technically disagreeing" is that "brightness" and
"reflectivity" of a surface are not the same thing.
Now, the bottom of the dinghy (it sits upside down on the foredeck of
the sailboat) is fluorescent yellow while parts of the inside of the
dinghy (can only be seen when it is right side up and being used) is
fluorescent orange.
My time crunch was that I expected to leave this coming weeknd with my
daughter and her bf but now she has to work so we have put it off till
after Thanksgiving.
The extreme brightness will make my planned "cutting out expedition"
to liberate a blow up raft from Jack when I pass his place more
difficult.

unexploaded shell from the Kearsarge .
Ray: Therein lies an historical "What if". What if that shell had
exploded and the Alabama won the battle. The ultimate result would
probably be insignificant. Even if the Alabama had continued her
depredations the final result would be unchanged.
Could the Alabama have been refitted somewhere?
even if the shell explodes the Alabama winning is doubful. it was about the
only hit they scored. the Kearsarge's two main guns were on pivot mounts and
each had close to a 270 degree field od fire and unlike the Alabama they USN
crew could hit what they were aiming at.
If I remember, the "Alabama" rarely had to fire her guns at her
captures.
She was firing high and wasting ammunition.
With Kearsage's rudder out of operation, , the Alabama could have
simply gone into the arcs where Kearsage could not fire and hammered
Kearsage into submission. Sometimes luck counts.
Alabama would have to recognize that she was firing high and wasting
ammunition.
With Kearsage's rudder gone, Alabama could simply sit off Kearsage's
stern and fire shot into Kearsage until she sank. Fall of shot would
be obvious.
1. Emergency gear to move the rudder independent of the rudder post.
2. Changing heading by adjusting sails
3. Changing heading by alternate forward and backward screw power.

can't just sit off her stern. Alabama has to chase her---which only
allows a limited number of guns to bear on Kearsarge.

How far forward or aft could Kearsage fire with steering sails?
Nobody like setting fire to their own sails.
Rigging a jury rudder is hard enough with an enemy pouring shot into
your stern where you are trying to rig it.
Having Kearsage underway would cause no problems for Alabama to
maneuver to keep on her stern firing the entire time.
Face it, losing your rudder with your enemy able to maneuver as he
likes is a serious problem. Only lots of luck and screw ups by the
enemy might save you.

the Alabama had a rather indifferent crew made up of whomever Semmes could

Something I remember reading about "Alabama" is that her prop could be
pulled up for better sailing ability. After seeing the primitive
props on the ironclad wrecks at the Museum in Columbus, GA, I can
imagine Alabama's was an ungainly thing. How common was this in ships
of that era?

Seeadler had a broadside of one four inch gun. Most of her 16 captures
were made without firing a shot. One casualty for both sides.

to be seen.

What I meant is that, all reflected light is scattered light whereas
not all scattered light is reflected light. Generally, most color we
see is due to scatter rather than reflection.
Another way to think of it is, A very good reflector may not exhibit
any color because no light is reflected to you. A scattering surface
will show color.
Reflectivity is a special case of scatter where an incoming and
outgoing ray have some geometric relationship such as Snells Law. Non
reflective scattering may be dependent on the scattering angle but
often is isotropic (no angular dependence).
Good reflectors are mostly conductors which is why the best ones are
metal whereas a good scatterer may be a dielectric or conductor.
A good reflector is ussually smoother than the wavelength of the light
whereas a good scatterer is rough compared to wavelength.

Fred, not all people are engineers... if someone gives an incorrect
description of the principles of operation of, say, a stage or camere
colour filter (or a running light, to give a sort of IT) , isn't his/her
fault...
