Does anyone know if British Royal Marine officers recived ther commisions
in the Napoleonic era thru buying them like the British Army, or earning
them like the Royal Navy?

1. Royal Marines could buy in just like their similarly red-coated land
brethren.
2. Commissions in the Royal Navy could not be bought at higher levels,
but it was sure easier to get entry at the bottom if you had either money
to buy your youngster in or a captain for a friend.
