Here's the Veterans' Day '96 version of the List of Naval and Maritime
Museums. It is provided free of charge, and may be distributed freely,
as long as there is no charge for said distribution.
This list is posted four times a year: Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Labor
Day and Veterans Day
Last updated: 11/12/96
New in this issue:
A few more Russian and US entries.
More Web pages. (I have tried to confirm them, but don't always have the
time to wait for the slower ones.)
You can also obtain an up-to-date copy via the Web at Andrew Toppan's
Railroads, Ships and Aircraft Homepage: http://www.wpi.edu/~elmer/
I will be putting the list on the homepage for the Battleship New Jersey
Historical Museum Society, http://www.quuxuum.org/bnj/. That list
will also be kept up-to-date.
The list is generally in the following format:
COUNTRY
State, Province, Region, etc.
City
Museum name and location
Museum phone number
Web page address
Ships Class (CV, BB, etc.), number
Highlights
As you will see, I don't have all the information for all the places,
and I am always interested in reports of visits to these places, so
please EMAIL any reports, additions, corrections or updates to:
Note: Even if you don't think you have a maritime museum nearby, check
your phone book and local tourist information sources - you might be
surprised. I have listings for several landlocked U.S. states, including
Iowa and Kentucky.
Disclaimer:
Some information here was confirmed and/or corrected using the Sea
Classics magazine annual Naval and Maritime Museums issue and
OPSail'92, the Official Magazine of Operation Sail.

Wilhelm Bauer, ex-U-2540 Type XXI
Seehund Mini sub
Raised in 1957 by the company Beckedorf, from a position at or near
Flensburg Feuerschiff. He was then placed in shallow waters to make
necessary repairs.
Then he was sold to the shipyard Howaldtswerke for 475,000 DM and towed
to Kiel, where he was completely repaired and refitted by 1958.
After repairs were completed, the boat was given the new Type class 241.
On 1 September 1960 it was named "U Wilhelm Bauer", Nato "Y 880"
Finally, in 1968 he was retired from active military duties.
On 20 May 1970 he was returned to active duty by a civilian
organization for industrial testing, including:
- torpedo firing and testing
- target for sonar detection dests, both active and passive
- boat for use with military swimmers/divers
- duties concerning mines
- testing of pyrotechniques and other counter measures
Multiple accidents (primarily two collisions with destroyers) made repairs
of the boat in 1980 too expensive, so it was decided to retire him on
November 18th, 1980.
On March 15th, 1982 he was finally sold to the Schiffartsmueseum.
Walk-through tours are available.
Parts of submarines on display, such as a TDC and a scope. Many models ships
from sailing ships up to the modern frigates and destroyers of the
Kreigsmarine.
It is advisable to go there between April and October because only in this
period is it possible to visit the ships and the subs, since they are lying
in a harbour basin and therefore are closed for the public when it may be
dangerous to visit them due to weather conditions.

UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND
I have deferred this section to a list created by Dr. M. H. Evans and Dr.
Janet West, a wife and husband team. Their list is very comprehensive, and
they will be maintaining it. It lists over 205 museums and 245 historic vessels
(many are part of museum collections, and a large number are small vessels) in
the British Isles, now including Ireland.
The file is over 2600 lines long, so to save space I'll just give a pointer.
