Both things they are worrying about are possible. There was an attackk
on the Cole, and certainly they could try something like that again,
though crews should be a bit better alerted now and would hopefully
hose the bad guys if they tried.
The threats against family members are also disturbing and possible.
Remember that there were several attempts to hit military bases in the
US, such as the Fort Dix plot, before the Fort Hood attack last year.
Also there was the attempt on the life of the Vincennes captain's
wife. Going after miltiary members' families would fit the pattern of
these little pussies.

Well, on the post I can find a certain propension to enforce secrecy,
whose can work as can't work; the best idea I find there is perhaps of
preferring attack to warship instead to commerce ships, whose says all.
On the threat to relatives, this can be really worrisome, because is the
most easy way to force everyone to bow to evil objectives (yea, I known,
is possible that people, esp. key people can sacrifice the family to
avoid ship's destruction, but, as example, no one gives magazine's keys
to terrorists whose held the family, but if they pose to be mere spies
and hinting that they only needs to grasp a pair or so of "these new,
highly classified fuzes..")
really major heists was based on holding key people's relatives and
forcing said people to allow entrance to caveaus, and many actually
succeed on the field.
Killing relatives outright is a rather futile from a military
standpoint, with high risk of backfiring spectaculary ( at the extreme,
there's nothing more dangerous of a CO with a deathwish and loved by
subordinates & crew...)
But on my main worry on US of A and USN (some people here known what is)
the "relatives holding" thing can be much more effective if is aimed to
merchant environment, from shipowner down....
