He didn't own a camera so he bought postcards from where ever he was.
Sometimes people gave them to him when they knew he was collecting

Paderborn was the home of the german armored forces and had the panzer
training school.
it was the site of a battle late in the war when the U.S.3rd Armored
division overran it and recieved a bloody nose doing so when the germans
counter-attacked. Major General Maurice Rose the division commander was
killed when he was captured and shot in the head by a german soldier with a
machine-pistol, Rose made a sudden move and the german gave him a burst,
his helmet is in the George S Patton Armor Museum at Fort Know. it's pretty
mangled.

So would he have come in later or been with the tanks? Or with the
reinforcements perhaps.
As a sharpshooter what would his role have been?

you can't be a sharpshooter from the rear.
and it's very telling that in the pictures he always has his rifle.
