Astigmatism happens when the eyeball loses its roundness and vision starts to become hazy. Astigmatism can also be caused by years of stress and strain on the eyes. The eye is surrounded by tiny muscles that help the eye ball elongate and contract. Years of tension, can weaken these muscles and cause problems when the eyes need to change shape. Astigmatism is normal as people age...

If people suddenly developed astigmatism, this might not sound completely
stupid.

If the keratometer showed any change in corneal curvature when the "tiny
muscles contract", this might not sound completely fabricated.

If the extraocular muscles "weakened" after "years of tension" then your
statements might not sound outrageously naive.

Unfortunately, it is common for astigmatism to be present at birth and
hardly change throughout life. The keratometer has been available for about
a hundred years and any doctor's office can demonstrate that the cornea does
not change shape as you focus. Range of motion in the extraocular muscles is
routinely evaluated at each eye examination and virtually all of the
"weakness" that we observe traces back to neurological changes, physical
orbital disturbances or causes like thyroid disease.

You can't just make these observations ("help the eye ball elongate and
contract") without actually cracking a book or measuring to see if the
eyeball actually changes shape. It doesn't, according to ultrasound, MRI and
keratometry.
