I had Varilux glasses 10 years ago and liked them.

Then I had cataract IOL implants in both eyes and have gotten along fine
with single vision lenses. I'm thinking of trying Varilux again, or whatever
brand / type of progressives might be best.

I'd appreciate whatever facts and opinions might be relevant, along with an
estimate of costs.

I'm 64, healthy, physically active, do a lot of computer work.

Script is:

OD -1.5 Sph
OS -2 +1.25 84

Thanks, Jack

Dear Jack,

I see from you post that you are about -1.5 diopters nearsighted.

I am curious -- did you request that your eye's be made -1.5 diopters
myopic.

I had cataract surgery one year ago, and stated strongly that I wanted
clear distant vision, and was quite willing to use over-the-counter
"readers" for my "near" vision.

The result of the operation was excellent.

Today, I pass the DMV, (at 20/40), and pass the 20/20 line. My
refractive STATE is between +1.0 and +1/2 diotper.

I need no longer "dependent" on any lens.

But this is always a matter of choice.

Enjoy,

What do you wear at the computer or when reading?

But this is always a matter of choice.

I had the IOLs set so that I could read and do computer work without
glasses.

When I drive or am outdoors, I would often wear sunglasses anyway, so having
corrective lenses is usually not a extra bother.

Dear Jack,

Subject: Always a choice.

Yes, I was given a choice of good vision at near, but then would
require a "minus" for distance.

But my interest was in no lens for distance:

Jack> What do you wear at the computer or when reading?

Otis> For a large computer -- no "plus" lens at all. For my computer
at home, +3/4 diopter.

Otis> That explains th -1.5 diopter prescriptoin.

Otis> It is truly nice to have a choice with IOLs.

Otis> I hope to, in time, be able to work on my computer with no
"plus" at all. But I don't mind, and prefer that choice.

Best,

Otis

Enjoy,

Lens brand is secondary to proper lens positioning. In most cases, the more
complex and expensive designs, when fit inaccurately, offer decreased
functionality compared to some of the cheaper, older designs. Regardless, most
folks will have symptoms (general discomfort, fatigue, reduced quantity and/or
quality of vision) with inaccurately positioned, poorly designed eyeglasses.

Concentrate on the optician's credentials, then talk about differences in the
lens designs.

One possibility is to keep your present glasses for driving and other distance
tasks, and order computer glasses for the monitor, desktop, and other near
tasks. I'd look closely at this solution due to the frequency of intermediate
tasks, the uncorrected cyl in the left eye, and the apparent lack of near
(reading) correction. Alternatively, you could continue to remove your distance
glasses for intermediate tasks and order a general purpose multifocal for
distance and near. There are other possibilities- an experienced optician will
help you find the most appropriate lenses for your circumstances.
