161 registered sex offenders?

Doesn't this seem like a large number? Investigators in this little
girls' murder have "ruled out all 161 registered sex offenders living
within a 5-mile radius of her home." How many registered sex offenders
live near you?

HOLY COW. How do they rule out that many with assurance? Not many
here, but one lives ON my road, though I'm not convinced of his
overall danger to society. Not sure of story, but ....

What galls me is that "sex offenders" don't seem to be differentiated.
Rape a child? Horrible - deserve to be on list and in jail. Have sex
with a gal a little off y our acceptable legal range and she consents
- same list. My FIL would be on this list in today's tradition. My MIL
is a number of years younger. It makes me sick.

Marsha, is there a link somewhere we can use to check?

All I know for sure is there is one living on my little road because a
neighbor told me about him.

When she was hoping to sell her home a few years ago, she found this
out by checking somewhere online. He was listed because he had abused
a young relative of his. She didn't tell me if the relative was a boy
or a girl or how the man was classified on the list.

agree, though. Some guy has consensual sex with a girl and he's
practically branded for life, although that's no excuse.

Judity, just google California sex offenders. that will take you to the
Calif. state web site of sex offenders. I think all states have sex
offender web sites. Arizona and Ohio I know for sure do. I checked out
California's and it's better than Arizona's.

Don't know how long ago that was or what state it was, but if it has
been a while and his record has been clean otherwise, it is possible
that he could petition the court to have it removed. A streaker isn't
considered a violent offender.

Google for Megan's List and you should find it. IIRC, in our county
they don't post listings of people within city limits, only in the
county area.

An offender doesn't have to be violent to be ordered by the court to
register FOR LIFE as a sex offender. In Texas, unless you are under 17
when you offended, registration is FOR LIFE, until the day of your
death. A registered sex offender's picture is posted and his employer
is listed, as well as his employer's address. I have a personal
friend, a female actually, who had pics of child porn on her computer.
No discussion whether she was right or wrong. But it IS wrong that she
is lumped into the same category as actual predators who actively
pursue children as sex objects. She is in her 60s, has never been in
trouble, and only looked at the pics out of curiosity, and has never
looked at a child with sex in mind. And it doesn't matter one iota how
"clean" she stays, she will always be a "registered sex offender" in
the eyes of the law. That is one thing that will never be changed.

been determined to present the highest risk of reoffending and to
require the widest range of notification; or found to be a sexually

So, it appears that non-predatory, non-violent, and low risk of
reoffending persons are not listed.

If it's California, he has a chance of petitioning the court to clear
it. Not sure how many years, but I was told that someone with a
nonviolent charge that required registration could petition the court to
clear his requirement, and I also know someone else who recently
successfully petitioned the court to clear theirs.
