Thanks!

I remember reading somewhere that poinsettias were poisonous, not just to
animals but to humans as well. I'd keep the cat away from it.
I'm so happy--I have a poinsettia that I bought last year that is still alive.
I didn't put it in a dark closet or anything, so it hasn't changed color but
that thing is about 3 times the size it was last year.

American by birth. Southern by the grace of God.
YEP! It is poisonous. I bet a web search would net you a whole list of
poisonous plants -- I'm sure I have seen one out there -- but I know
poinsettias are definitely poisonous.

We have a nice poinsettia plant for Christmas, but my wife thinks she
read somewhere they could be poison. The cat is trying to eat the
leaves. Anyone know about this?
Thanks!
Neal
They sell those here and they are made of wheat grass. Wheat berries are
very easy to find these days with all the survivalists and Y2K just around
the corner. ;)
Call me anal (again) but I was fearful of the grass seeds I found locally which
were treated with something that made them inedible. Sometimes my cats pull
this stuff out by the roots. I went to a feed store and got hay seed and oat
seed (untreated, I asked). Word of warning, though, don't buy too much or it
will get bugs before you use it all up. I thought I was being real smart
buying a year's supply because it was cheap....not so smart after all.
My local pet store, and even the grocery stores have grass for cats. Most of
the online pet suppliers have it, too.

WOW. I had no idea that Aloe Vera was dangerous and I'm also growing elephant
ears right at the favorite cat windowsill, but they don't seem interested in
anything but the grass I grow for them.

Actually, most animals are good judges of what and what not to eat. We have
had several poisonous plants to horses in our pasture for well near 50
years, and only once had a problem, which was a young horse, and minor
(nightshade) with foaming mouth, and under the weather for a day or so, but
it was a scare. (She never ate it again!)
Generally when horses are well fed they will not eat poisonous plants and
when you hear of poison cases generally the horses were not adequately fed.
My vet agrees with this theory.
My dogs and cats both leave the "Bufo" (not sure of the real name) frogs
alone and we have lots and lots of them, and of course they are poisonous.
If your cat is a house cat only then it's good advice to plant something
they can eat. We find ours that are allowed outdoors at will leave our
house plants alone, though since moving to Florida, I don't feel the urge to
have the houseplants I did when up north, as everything is so green year
round! Even our poinsiettas are outside.
Barb C.
I've also had to hang my clover leaf plants because she'll bat the leaves,
which will bounce around and she tries to chew them. The last time she did
that she ran around the room panting, as if her mouth was on fire and with her
tongue hanging out.
By the way, I got that list from a website for pets. I was very concerned
about my kitten and was looking for traits specifc to Persians and I found the
list there. I hope it's a legitimate list...............(now I think about it
after sending it).

Before you buy.
I was just reading about this a few days ago.
"Poinsettias: This ubiquitous holiday flower is not a toxic plant, despite
what you have heard. Eating the leaves or flowers may cause skin irritation or
an upset stomach."
