Finally over with my surgery and back home with my new hip. I'm so far
behind in my work I haven't had chance to try to find out what has been
happening here.

I am really quite upset about my hospital stay, though. It's been about 10
and 11 years since my last joint replacements (both knees, and left hip) and
I could not believe how the standard of care has deteriorated. Not only is
health care more expensive, but it is nowhere near as good as it was then.
I'm glad to be home!

Can I deduct from my age now, since only part of me will be 75 in December!

Barb,

I'm sorry to hear your care was so bad. When I lived in Florida the
health care didn't seem to be very good. All the Doctors had too many
patients and the good ones had way too many. I asked the NP at our
Doctor's office why they didn't stop taking patients and she said that
if they did that, the insurance companies would cancel their contracts.

Marina is recovering from knee surgery. She had a torn meniscus, torn
ACL, and her knee cap was pushed off center. The surgery went very well
and she received excellent care from the moment she walked in until I
took her home. We made sure that everyone knew that was how we felt.

When the nurse who took care of Marina after the recovery nurse, called
the next day for a follow up, we told her again how wonderful everyone
was and she told us that people like us made it possible to handle all
the bad patients.

The only downside is that no one told us about the 8 - 12 week recovery
period until I took Marina for her 1 week post-surgery visit with the
surgeon. He did say when he reviewed the MRI results prior to surgery
that there was evidence of possible further damage. After surgery he
told me that he did a lot of work in her knee.

Good deal, Barb--so glad you're home--all various pieces of you! <GG>
I hope recovery goes well!

I'm a little concerned about one thing, though...we differ a great
deal in our politics, my friend. You don't get more than one vote now
that you have new parts, do you??? ;-)

Big hug!

How are you feeling, Barb? Did everything go okay? I don't even know when
you went into the hospital!

I feel awful about the changes I've seen in health care over the years.
It's become so impersonal, and so many places are squeezed financially,
they're frightenly understaffed. My dad spent 3 months in a physical
rehabilitation center and came home with horrible decubitus ulcers. They'd
also put him in Depends, even though he was able to make it to the bathroom
as long as he had assistance with walking. He received much better care at
home. It was awful.

I hope you're doing better and recover wonderfully! BTW, I'm on the other
side of the political spectrum than Anne in Ohio, and I'm hoping you DO get
2 votes! (big grin and wink at Anne in Ohio)

Health care in the Miami area has always been good, and we have the #1
trauma center in the country. Ten years ago I would have rated the care
excellent. This time it was terrible. Communication is probably the worst
problem--because I am anemic they kept trying to push me to take oral iron
which I cannot tolerate--verified by my hematologist. That was a little
thing, but such types of little things can still be serious. It took them 3
days to read my input clearance papers to discover the UTI they "discovered"
on the 3rd day post surgery was the cause of a slight fever and that I had
the UTI on admission. I am not following the ADA diet plan for diabetes,
but at my PCP's advice following a low carb diet and had recommended a book
which I read thoroughly. The diabetic menu was inappropriate even by ADA
standards and few choices for me. Because they said I was not eating enough
(Bob was bringing me food from home) they kept adding unordered things to my
meals--totally inappropriate for a diabetic, such as orange juice, canned
fruits with syrup, mashed potatoes, and when I asked for plain applesauce,
no sugar added, I got a container where the second ingredient was high
fructose corn syrup. Their low-salt diet contained foods I could not
consume because they were too salty! They had the nerve to tell me they
were sending a diabetic educator to my home to instruct me in diabetic care.
Following the alternate program advised by my doctor in 3 years I have lost
50 pounds and brought my A1C test down to where I do not even test positive
for diabetes any more. I think they should perhaps send the nurse educator
out for me to educate her in that there is more than one way to treat
diabetes.

And, the list goes on--won't bore you with it, except the Home Health nurse
who was supposed to come to the house never showed! Hopefully that is
rectified now. Ten years ago I had excellent care and do not remember it as
an unpleasant stay at all.

Gee, that would be a good thing for me? I've always had strong political
opinions. Seriously considered a legal education with the intent of getting
involved in politics. You have no idea how glad I am that I did not choose
that course. Let's see, my husband and I, my 3 children, and their
significant others are all voting for Obama. The only time I wish I had a
bigger family!

Yes, those are the kinds of things I am talking about. I came home in 5
days with bed sores and I told them on admission I was prone to them and
they did NOTHING to prevent them or even to treat them after they developed!

I'm feeling good. It takes about 6 weeks of therapy, which I am supposed to
be getting at home, to recover. But, each day gets better, and the results
from joint replacement are absolutely worth the surgery ordeal. I would
have been in a wheelchair years ago if it were not for the joint
replacements. I've probably put at least one of my surgeon's children
through college. Fortunately my surgeon has been my client for 19 years,
and we are friends, and he saw too it that I got out a day before I was
scheduled, as my claustrophobia was really getting the best of me. 23 1/2
hours in bed with 30 minutes of rehab! I'm not sure I'd have made it
another night.

I think that the one-size-fits-all care is one of the worst things about the
trend I've been seeing. Part of me understands the reasoning, but it's just
not going to work for a lot of people. I'm glad you're well educated in
caring for your medical conditions, and I wish everyone would/could be!
(When you get the chance to educate the diabetic educator, would you film it
for us and put it up on the web? I'd love to see it! <G>)

Best wishes for a quick recovery, Barb!

<shaking my head> Glad you're home now, Barb and on your way to
recovery.

I ended up in the hospital at the end of August (with no insurance).
Went in on a Friday with chest pain and they were whisking me to the
cath lab when someone said, "Wait, it says here she's allergic to
dye." So instead of in and out on Friday, I had to spend the weekend
(with no insurance) so I could be prepped and have cath on Monday. I
was livid but scared enough to stay put. Cath was fine but if I was
going to owe someone $20k I'd much rather have spent 3 days on a REAL
vacation!

Bam, I'm so glad you're okay, but also so sorry about the hospital bill!
Not having any insurance either, that's one of my worst fears.
