June 10 - 12, 1998, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

"Communication in health care"

* Call for abstracts issued February 1997. Deadline: July 31, 1997 *

"Medicine is a delicate balance of art, science and communication."

(Carole Guzman). Communication can be considered as the link between

art and science. Its importance has been stressed since Hippocrates.

Now that the limits of medical technology are in sight, communication

has been rediscovered by scientists and politicians alike. This

international conference is devoted to an assessment of the state

of the art of communication research in the broadest sense. Its

very name "Communication in Health Care", denotes communication

between providers and patients in a variety of medical settings,

e.g. primary care, the hospital, nursing care and institutional

care. Invited speakers will highlight aspects of doctor-patient

communication in general practice, out-patient and nursing care,

communication training in medical schools, communication in

vocational training and new trends in communication research.

There will be ample opportunity to make oral or poster

presentations, to organize workshops or to give demonstrations.

Sessions on training and evaluation will be designed to extend the

dialogue begun at the conference on "Teaching about Communication

in Medicine" (Oxford, July 1996)

The conference will be held from 10 to 12 June 1988 in the Free

University, Amsterdam. The conference center is within 15 minutes

by train from Schiphol International Airport and 20 minutes by

'sneltram' from Amsterdam Central Station. Hotel rooms are

available within walking distance of the conference center.

The historical center of Amsterdam with its numerous famous

museums, exclusive shopping malls and restaurants, is within easy

reach.

Earlybird registration must be received by 15 February 1998.

IN GEDEMPTEN TOON

verre

tusschen u en mij.

J.H. Leopold

IN HUSHED VOICE

A silent day is among me and in me life is faint,

I feel the fear of being and am in my peace alone.

Isn't there in me the attention of verses and their silently directed

complaisance into this small poem of some happyness and light sorrow?

---that you were once near to me an other time and I found you cool
and

pure and did understand the distance between you and me.

J.H. Leopold
