Eating Habits of Obese Include More Late-day Meals
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_9056.html
"Reuters Health

Thursday, August 22, 2002

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Obese women eat one more meal a day than
their non-obese peers, and tend to consume more food later in the day,
Swedish researchers have found.

With obesity levels on the rise around the world, researchers are
searching for ways to correctly gauge eating behavior, in the hopes of
identifying eating habits that could be targeted by obesity treatment
strategies.

In the current study, Dr. H. Berteus Forslund of Sahlgrenska
University Hospital in Gothenburg and colleagues interviewed 83 obese
women and 94 women of normal weight. The researchers used a
questionnaire they developed that aims to identify "all intake
occasions, even those consisting of one drink," they note.

Eating occasions were divided into main meals, light meals, snack
meals and drinks.

The obese women consumed 6.1 meals per day compared with 5.2 meals for
non-obese women, the researchers report in the August issue of the
European Journal of Clinical Nutrition."

Did they split their calories up among all the meals
which is the right way to do it, or did they eat more
calories than they should? It doesn't say so you

Er John, the idea of eating more meals to lose weight I think, is suggesting
several SMALLER meals a day as opposed to 3 large ones. I had been eating 3
regular meals, and just switched to 6 this past week. I did not eat MORE
food, the points were the same at the end of the day as what I ate last
week, I was not as hungry, and I appear to have lost 2 pounds this week
(official update tomorrow at weigh in).

Perhaps the real question is, why did the obese women in the study feel the
need to have another meal? Were they just pigs that had to have one more
meal? Or perhaps the normal weight women were just incredibly disciplined
and were able to resist the desire to have another meal later. OR maybe it
has something to do with carbohydrates. Hmmm. Suz

PS I have many normal weight friends and I only know one that is actually
disciplined. I am far more disciplined than the majority of my thin friends.

news:p25dmus84fbkdtkgd...@4ax.com
by speaking thusly:

What enquiring minds want to know is really this:

Why must there always be one person to shit on anyone's parade?

I have been in an out of newsgroups for over a decade and no matter what the
group, there is always someone who feels the need to "reality bust" the
people
within that group. Whether it was alt.fan.countingcrows,
alt.support.diet.low-carb,
rec.sport.fantasy.football, rec.sport.football, there is always about 1
"reality buster"
for every thirty active posters. Whether is was that rugby is the real man's
sport,
that LC lifestyle doesn't work, that fantasy football is a waste of time,
there is always
one.

I would really like to get in the mentality of it. What is the need to come
into someone's
group, in which the "troll" clearly has no real interest, only to shoot at
people who are
just trying to get along and share their experiences. While Mr. TheMan has a
study he
pulled from out of his ass, many people have already said that their
experience is contrary
to his report. While many people are quick to try and poke holes in Low
Carb, there are
so many people who are having success with it and more every day. Why Mr.
TheMan
needs to butt in, I would like to know.

I know it is not a sense of civic duty. Perhaps, on the surface of the mind
of the "troll", there
is a sense of doing good, but if that were truly the motivation, they would
take a different
tone, and when yelled at, move on, saying, "sucks for them they can't
appreciate what I
have to share." It must be the same thing that causes people to write
graffiti, knock over
mailboxes, and play their car stereos at deafening volumes in the middle of
the night. Small
malicious glee.

What we should do is twofold. Set up a place for all of them to bust reality
on one another.
A place where they can all comment on the fallacies of each other's lives,
from living in mom's
basement to penis size to personal wealth to IQ and so on. Concurrently,
those of us actually
in groups ought to ignore them, dump em to the kill file, and, to quote the

better still."

I have been shoving so much high fat foods down my throat for the past nine
months that people think I have one foot in the grave. I eat close to a
dozen eggs, a pound of sausage, and a quarter pound of monterey jack cheese
for breakfast... and for the rest of the day I finish off a 2.5lb pack of
hamburger, usually get 5 out of it (constantly munching) or I switch to two
whole chickens, rotisserie... yum (again constantly munching.) Long story
short, I have lost close to 75lbs, and 5 pant sizes, I've always had
perfect blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol... its just about my
ass size... LOL

put that in your pipe and smoke it. smaller stomach...sheesh, WHAT can I do

The point is that it works . Most people cant diet for more
than a few days because of hunger pangs but one day fasts are common.
The liquids ie soups etc. may give you 1000 calories and the next day
you eat your nromal 2000 but you find that you feel a bit too full and
cut down automatically.
1000 calorie loss down every other day means a 50 pounds a
year .

Your math doesn't compute!

Why am I *not* surprised?

41 pounds over 6 months averages to 1.7 pounds lost a week, *not* the

John, did it occur to you, during your feeble and ultimately
unsuccessful attempt to prove you actually have a functioning brain
mass, that Lesanne could have averaged 1.7 pounds per week AND lost 3
pounds last week? You see, Einstein, it is possible to do both. Yes I
know, that third grade math is tough these days.

Here is a shortened example. (I'm sorry that these use decimals, but try
to keep up...oh, and a decimal is the part of the number to the right of
the little dot thingy. )

Week one: 2.6 pounds
Week two: .8 pounds
Week three: 1.0 pounds
Week four: 3 pounds
Week five: 1.2 pounds
Week six: 2 pounds
Week seven: 1.3 pounds

If you can do the math, you'll notice in week four that this person lost
three pounds AND across the course of the seven weeks, averaged a loss
of 1.7 pounds.

OK, you can go finish watching your cartoons now.

When you weigh 435 pounds, the priority is to lose weight.

I am all for morbidly obese people to eat a high fat diet, if in fact
it allows them to loose the weight without giving them a heart attack.

Max,

I think in this case, Aucum's Rule applies: The simplest explanation
is the most likely. That is, the person making these posts is
probably even more insecure than the people making the support posts.
The people looking for support are at least comfortable enough in
their own struggle to open up to others in the same boat, and ask
for mutual understanding. The person who steps back and can only
point out flaws is simply so incredibly insecure, that they're
willing to sacrifice the goodwill of others simply to draw attention
from their own flaws.

The sad part is, oftentimes, their flaws aren't really that big
of a deal; maybe they're simply a little overweight, or a mild
underachiever, or just plain a shallow person. Nothing that
couldn't be overcome with a little support from the same people
that they mock. It's sad, really.

Don't be mad; instead, pity, and turn the other cheek.

Kevin.

Wow, the true brilliance of our champion shines through. I disagree
with you and your method of information dissemination so I'm a
shit head? Sad. Can't do any real soul searching to figure why you
post the way you do and what sad lack of confidence causes you to
post as 'The Man' when with that method of discourse you are
clearly John 'The Child'.

The Man might take a look inside and figure why he must crap on
people who are doing what they like and having sucess with it. The
Man might say, "Boy, when you put it that way, I guess I really am
kind of out of line, and I might appologize, or at the very least, I
will skulk off and fade away."

The Child on the other hand would come in and call people names,
not answer their points and generally annoy rather than inform. I'll
let the public decide which category John falls into.

> Hey Bud, all I did was report on published medical research.

Yeah, but did you understand it, kid? Do you understand how people
who go on diets arrange their six meals, sport? Tiger, do you see how
the study you are citing really has no bearing on people on diets, rather
on people not dieting. Maybe if you read the study, son, instead of just
posting it, mack, you might have a clue as to why people get annoyed
with you. I'm not even gonna go into the flawed methodology of
applying this study to people in the United States, as it's a skewed &
small sample size. If you need help with this concept, doubtless
someone truly versed in science will be able to help you.

> Hey Bud, all I did was state the obvious.

The obvious, as backed up by your medical report is this. If you
eat an extra meal a day, without watching points, carbs, calories,
balance or whatever your diet has you watching, you will be more
prone to being overweight. It doesn't factor that dieters who go to a
five or six meal plan are spreading their units out over their six without
actually increasing intake. It doesn't address the possibility of a Way
of Eating or a Diet at all. This is why your obvious is really off topic
and has not been recieved well.

> Why do shit heads insist on having mental breakdowns in public?

I dunno. Enlighten us. If you think that I had a mental breakdown, go
back and read it again, keyboard jockey. Slowly and carefully, so all
the words fully unfold their meanings within your mind. Personally, I
missed me having a mental breakdown. And I was there when I wrote
it, so I think I oughta know. No mental breakdown here, just more
rational questioning of a troll, junior.

> PS: I will do it again tomorrow because tomorrow is just another day.

I want you to take a deep thought into this one. Not some quick, smart
assy answer, but a real soul searcher. Why do it again tomorrow? What's
the point? Because you get some kind of thrill from pissing people off?
Doesn't that seem deviant to a rational mind? Wouldn't your time be
better spent doing anything else but annoying people? Perhaps even by
staying in bed for an extra hour. This is doubtless too much to hope for.

Keep doing it. Eventually everyone will kill file you and you can talk to
yourself. Begs the question, if a poster posts and no one reads it, does it
really have any content at all?

While there are some heated discussions in this group and not everyone is
always nice, there are far more nicer people than the couple of trolls who
like to argue for sport or to feel superior.

For instance, I know when Caleb posts about day 7 tomorrow and I tell him
that I went a full hour and really cut back on my calories to attone for
date night, he will encourage me. I know that both Rosie and Carol will
contribute something worth thinking about. I enjoy talking about exercise
to Rosie T and (Help me, I am so bad with names!) that other woman who is
competitive lifter in her 50's. When I'm discouraged, I look at Bicker's
before and after pics. I am genuinely concerned about the newbie who is
doing water aerobics and like watching her progress.

And then, well........ there's always the killfile option. We are not
evil, mean intentioned folks.

I am in the middle of a regulatory project that involves sitting in front of
the computer, downloading regs, printing forms, etc. This is the
exceedingly tedious type of work that frustrates me with all the waiting.
In the past, I would run to the kitchen and nibble on something. Now, I
just come here. I find inspiration, entertainment and the occasional
intelligent debate. I have learned to stay away from the troll debates,
though - as tempting as it sometimes is.

That's actually a medical term. I believe the term 'morbidly obese' kicks
in after someone is greater than 20 percent over their ideal body weight but
I could be wrong. I have also seen it defined in terms of BMI. Morbidity
actually refers to illness and mortality is the death thing as in 'morbidity
and mortality' reports generated about MD's, meds, medical devices, etc.
(You should read some, one day. They are a ton of fun!)

My problem with the term is that patients have rights to see their medical
records (they never talk about Nurse's rights) and they are usually grossly
offended when they see themselves described as Morbidly Obese. They equate
'Morbidly Obese' with "The patient is a big fat pig". Most patients know
when they are too heavy and can live with a Doc telling them that 20 percent
of more of their weight needs to go. They do not like being called Morbidly
Obese, however. (Neither would I!)

Since you love spinach so much, you should try it the way they make
something called 'sag' in India. Basically, fry it over little oil which
removes the water from the leaves, add hot green chillis, pieces of garlic
and sliced onions. Usually, you can do this with fresh or frozen spinach.
Never heard of canned spinach.

I think it is possible to real and kind simultaneously. If a patient hears
something that is too painful, it is difficult to comprehend. By chosing
words carefully, a message may be conveyed more efficiently.

Being told that one is morbidly obese or reading those words in a chart may
shock some patients into reality but may just as easily alienate others who
are not ready to face the risks they are posing to their health. A good
clinician can get around this by speaking to the patient with respect and
emphasizing the positive benefits that come from losing weight vs the
negative aspects of being overweight. Offering to help and support a
patient who needs to make significant lifestyle changes is almost always
more effective than bullying a patient!

The same applies outside of the clinician/pt relationship, too. If we, on
ASD, continue to refer to overweight people (and think about who frequents
this list) as dead men walking, morbidly obese, (I think I fit the
definition, thank you very much) etc., the support that those of us need to
get by will be undermined by negative comments.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Another way to eat a hell of a lot of spinach at once is an Arab dish
called "eggah" - you build up layers of spinach and fresh herbs in a
flat pan, pour beaten egg with salt and pepper over it, and bake it or
(if you're using a heavy iron pan) cook it over slow heat. You only
use enough egg to hold it together and no more, it should have a much
higher veg-to-egg ratio than a quiche. Sumac is good sprinkled over
the top if you can find it. Wouldn't work at all with canned spinach.

It's a handy pizza alternative for anyone with combined wheat/dairy
intolerance, being flat and savoury. I'm unlikely ever to eat it again,
bugger it (egg intolerance).

Oh! You're going to offer incorrect advice to people who haven't learned
how unschooled and unlearned you are? Or does that merely mean that another
of your personalities has demanded dominance?

Or, perhaps you've simply learned that in a war of words and intellect, you
are unarmed and unmanned. This is where you normally resort to vulgarity
and obscenity as you don't have the capacity to do any better. So feel free

You're incredibly boring, predictable, and poorly equipped for anything
academic or biomedical. You claim academic credentials you fail to

But don't worry, I'll still hang around and remind folks how you lied to

As everyone can see, you blew the grammar and spelling portion of your posts
yet again. Isn't it wonderful that your ability to use a pc allows you to
socially and intellectually disgrace yourself in front of hundreds of people
in multiple usegroups simultaneously. One can hear snickers and laughter
across the nation and in other countries everytime one of your mis-spelled
posts shows up. Explain to the world how a self-inflicted iron deficiency
relates to the "art of nutrition."

Eating 4 or 5 cans of anything in one sitting is my primary

This thread resulted in the revelation that:

1)Morbidly obese individuals think that their life threatening health
condition is a total joke; and
2)Eating 4 or 5 cans of spinach is considered a *normal* portion size.

I made more intellectual progress on morbid obesity in the last two
days than you have made all year. :-)

no actually its from eating between 6 peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches a
day for the first 14 years of my life, that and 2 2liters of soda. Which
is actually quite a "normal" amount. Just not normal food.

I have proof that you're wrong... proof proof prooof. I am loosing
weight (75lbs so far) and eating enough for 3 'normal' people. All my
numbers are great; blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol.
