Saltigo, a subsidiary of the LANXESS specialty chemicals company, is
helping to provide effective protection against insect stings and
bites from mosquitoes, flies, ticks
and others. Its proven active ingredient for insect repellents,
Saltidin, thus plays an important role in helping to control dangerous
diseases, such as malaria, dengue hemorrhagic fever, yellow fever,
west-nile virus, borreliosis (Lyme disease) and tick-borne
encephalitis.

Specifically, Saltidin has been recommended by the World Health
Organization (WHO) as a substance of choice against mosquito bites
transmitting malaria.

Insect repellents containing Saltidin are available in most of the
countries in different forms and concentrations (5-25%): sprays,
lotions, wipes or sticks which are sold, for example, in supermarkets,
pharmacies, and drugstores. Depending upon the dosage level, the
active formula provides between 3 to 5 hours (10% formula) and up to
14 hours (20% formula) of protection. Saltidin’s efficacy to provide
up to 14 hours of protection is a major differentiator from similar
products.

According to the WHO, dengue haemorrhagic fever affects most Asian
countries and has become a leading cause of hospitalization and death
among children in the region. Malaria claims almost one million lives
per year and afflicts as many as half a billion people in 109
countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. A child dies from malaria
every 30 second.

Alvin Gan, LANXESS’s Regional Manager for Basic and Fine Chemicals,
ASEAN region, said, “Consumers in Asia are becoming more health
conscious and discerning. They are increasingly opting for products
which are not only effective but proven to be safe. Saltidin fulfills
these requirements.”

Saltidin is successfully registered in over 40 countries. This covers
important markets, such as the USA, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Saltidin – in chemical terms 1-(1-methylpropoxycarbonyl)-2-(2-
hydroxyethyl)piperidine, or icaridin – does not poison insects; it
repels them by acting effectively on their sense of smell in a way
which does not bother users.

The toxicological profile of Saltidin has been extensively evaluated
following a program of protocols developed in close cooperation with
the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In order to generate the
most reliable and consumer relevant data, all studies involved
application of Saltidin-containing products to the skin and measured
dermal exposure. No adverse outcomes were identified in any studies in
the program. It is concluded that Saltidin
- is safe when used as indicated
- is extremely gentle to the skin and not sticky
- has no irritating or sensitizing potential
- has a minimal rate of absorption
- is suitable for children aged 2 and over

The cosmetic
properties of Saltidin have also been tested. The results were
remarkable: the formulations are not sticky, and have a pleasant
feeling, being at the same time safe to use on the skin, as long as
the instructions for use are followed.

The effect of Saltidin on various materials, like plastics,
synthetics, plastic coatings and sealing compounds has been tested, as
well. It was found that Saltidin - in contrary to other insect
repellents - has no adverse impact on these materials.

Saltidin is approved by the US EPA and by countries, such as Sweden,
Norway and Denmark, which apply very stringent criteria with respect
to environmental and consumer protection.

LANXESS is a leader in specialty chemicals with sales in 2008 of EUR
6.58 billion and currently around 14,800 employees in 21 countries.
The company has operations at 44 sites worldwide. LANXESS’s core
business comprises the development, manufacture and marketing of
plastics, rubber, intermediates and specialty chemicals. More
