My wife, Frances, was diagnosed with ALS in July 2000 by Dr. Oh at the University of Alabama.
I am not an M.D. I am a business man with a BS in Textile Management from GA TECH. My studies included 3 years of chemistry. The following is my opinion:
Martin Atkinson-Barr CPhys PhD, a scientist from England, now a U.S. citizen, has determined a cure for Lyme/ALS disease. He is of the opinion that the same bacteria that causes lyme disease causes ALS. I think he should be awarded the Nobel prize for his work on lyme/ALS disease.

TREATMENT PER DR. ATKINSON-BARR:
2-weeks doxycycline then...
2-weeks tinidazole then...
Rest for 2-weeks
and repeat as necessary.
NOTE: We started off with tinidazole instead of doxycycline. We did this because we thought any adverse herxheimer reactions would be less with tinidazole.

Doxycycline - can be obtained from your local pharmacy with a doctor’s prescription.
Tinidazole- your doctor can obtain this from Hopewell Pharmacy - in NJ. Phone number 1-800-792-6670.
Flagyl - You can substitute Flagyl in place of Tinidazole, and flagyl can be obtained from your local pharmacy with a prescription.. However, tinidazole was reported to be 10 times better than flagyl. It is my understanding that Dr. Atkinson-Barr’s brother, his brother’s wife and son were not completely cured until the introduction of tinidazole, but I could be mistaken.

TREATMENT FRANCES USED:
Take tinidazole - 500 mg capsule - for 14 days(2-weeks)
Day 1 - 1-capsule at breakfast.
Day 2 - 4-capsules. 1 at breakfast, 1 at lunch, 1 at dinner, 1 at bedtime.
Day 3 thru 14 - 1-capsule per day at breakfast - then
Take doxycycline - 100 mg capsule - for 14 days(2-weeks)
Day 1 thru 14 - 2-capsules. 1- at breakfast - 1-at dinner, then
Rest for 2 weeks - then
Repeat as necessary.
She has been taking capsules with either food or water.
She has had no adverse reactions whatsoever.
Condition before taking tinidazole: speech slurred badly. Was hard to understand her. Swallowing was a real problem - would take her ½ to 3/4 of an hour to eat a simple meal.
Day 1 - Saturday Results - speech slightly better. Swallowing the same.
Day 2 - Sunday Results - speech slightly better. Swallowing the same.
Day 3 - Monday Results - speech slightly better. Swallowing the same.
Day 4 - Tuesday Results - A BREAKTHROUGH. Frances had a restriction in her throat such that she had to chew and swallow 1-green bean at a time and the rest of her food the same. THE RESTRICTION WAS GONE!
Day 5 - Wednesday Results - speech slightly better. Swallowing better.
Day 6 - Thursday Results - speech the same. Swallowing the same.
Day 7 - Friday Results - speech is distinct most of the time, but slow. When she gets tired, her speech starts to slur. Swallowing almost normal.
WARNING - IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT SOME PERSONS HAVE HAD SEVERE ADVERSE REACTIONS (CALLED JARISH HERXHEIMER REACTIONS) FROM TAKING DOXYCYCLINE AND/OR TINIDAZOLE OR FLAGYL, AND THE REACTIONS CAN MAKE YOU SICK. SEE YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE OR SUPPLEMENTS.
Prior to taking tinidazole, Frances was taking most of the items listed in Steve Shackel’s website under "My Regimen." http://www.goulburn.net.au/~shack/myregimen.htm She is allergic to garlic and knew this and did not take any. She took burdock root for a short time, but was allergic to this and did not take any more.. Steve believes the silymarin/milk thistle is very important and I do, also. It is a liver cleanser. Frances had twitches in her left arm. After a short while - less than a month, on Steve’s Regimen and some other things that I added, they went away and have not returned.
Also, for the last couple of months, Frances has been under the care of a wonderful doctor, Robert A. Burkich, M.D., Chattanooga, TN - Phone 423-266-4474 - FAX 423 266-4464. Dr. Burkich does chelation therapy, UBI(ultraviolet blood irradiation) Oxidation therapy, Vitamin C IV’s, etc. - all of these to boost her immune system

Things we have tried during the period July 2000 to November 2000 and our opinion:
Rilutek - for 2 months - no benefit.
Allopurinol and trientine for 2 weeks - no benefit.
Allopurinol, trientine and rilutek for 2 weeks - no benefit
Cytolog - makes you feel good, gives you energy, makes some things (creatine) easier to swallow, but will not cure you.
I want to thank several people who have helped us:
GOD! I somehow missed Ron White’s post of August 23, 2000. About 2 months later in October I clicked on a post and when it came up, Ron White’s post of August 23, 2000, came up with it - a miracle. God gave me a second chance to see it. Ron said if Frances were ever healed, it would be God that did it, and he was correct.

Dr. Ramon Sanchez in Atlanta, Ga. He stated he could not heal Frances, but God could. He also said he would pray for her. He was kind enough to prescribe allopurinol and trientine when no one else would. He gave us hope, and we very much needed it at that time. We felt we were at the end of our rope and no where else to go.
Ron White who offered us advice and prayed for us over the phone. He has been a great help to a lot of people and may God bless him for his kindness. If it had not been for him, the chances of my finding Dr. Atkinson-Barr’s website were almost zero.
Steven Shackel who’s website has helped and encouraged a lot of people. May God have a special place in heaven for him for his help and kindness.
Robert A. Burkich, M.D., our current doctor. He said he could not guarantee any cure, but was willing to work with us. He is using alternative medicine and therapy that is healing a lot of people that would otherwise probably not be healed. He has been wonderful in working with us to find a cure for a fatal disease. We will always remember him.

11-27-00 - UPDATE
11-27-00 - Monday - Frances started on doxycycline
11-30-00 - Thursday - Frances is still very weak and her speech is slurred; however, her swallowing is still improved to about 90%. I think the weakness is caused by herxheimer reaction and the weakness causes her slurred speech. I look for both of these to improve after the 2-week cycle of doxycycline.
11-30-00 - Thursday - I gave Frances 30 ml of Sun Chlorella about 3 p.m. this afternoon. It is supposed to be a very good blood cleanser with lots of chlorophyll and is supposed to be a very good detoxification agent. This should mitigate or lessen the herxheimer reaction. We will see??
12-11-00 - Frances only took a few doses of this. Thinks she is allergic to it. Cannot really give an opinion as to results. MB
12-01-00 - Friday - 6:00 p.m. Our Son, Stephen, just came in from college. He said, Mother is talking better now than she was last week when I was here.
12-11-00 - Frances’ swallowing is still about 90% of normal. Speech is about the same. Will report again on 12-25-00.

These treatments did not cure her, but she said they made her feel better. She is now being treated every 2 weeks by Dr. Robert A. Here is some of what he said: "On December 4, 1998 Richard Horowitz called me to say that he too had had very good results on flagyl. We agreed to publish at the forthcoming lyme & spirochetal diseases conference. The paper was not accepted for full presentation, just the poster session. Who needs new treatments when the disease is readily cured? (Comment by Mack Baker - This last sentence is a very well deserved slur on the medical profession that says lyme disease can be cured with antibiotics in 4 to 6 weeks.) We presented on 140 patients and I was able to meet and discuss flagyl with many of the well known lyme physicians.
"Since then things have gone from strength to strength. Tinidazole, very similar to flagyl, has proven to be more effective in-vitro and in-vivo. I have run out of volunteers - they are all well - thankyou.." (Comment by Mack Baker - MAB was treating his brother, his brother’s wife and their son. All three were cured of Lyme disease - these are the volunteers he is talking about). MAB said "I now believe that ALS and Lyme are linked conditions. My hypotheses are:
ALS is a consequence of an infection of the motor tracks by Borrelia burgdorferi.
Classic antibiotic therapy is unable to penetrate the dense tissue of the motor tracks. The route of infection is via ingestion of the infected tick and its attachment in the gut, proximal to the motor tracks, such that the body is unable to mount an effective immune response before the spirochete reaches the motor track. My friend Vernon Padgett MD, a man with immense experience in the treatment of syphilis, has told me that the appearance of the motor tracks in ALS is not inconsistent with a spirochetal infection." (Comment by Mack Baker - Note: He said his opinion is ALS is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi - the same bacteria that causes Lyme disease; therefore the conclusion is since ALS and Lyme are caused by the same bacteria, they both can be healed by the same treatment - doxycycline and trinidazole.)Frank, have a good year. YEARS.
It is NOT a 'miracle cure'.
It is a very interesting drug, yes.
And it is a potent carcinogen too (it can cause CANCER)
