Counting Copy Numbers Characterizes Prostate Cancer
Non-invasive 'liquid biopsies' can find metastatic or recurrent
prostate cancer, in a low cost assay suitable for most healthcare
systems, finds research published in BioMed Central's open access
journal Genome Medicine. Genomic signatures of prostate cancer,
isolated from plasma DNA, display abnormal copy numbers of specific
areas of chromosomes. It is even possible to separate out patients who
develop resistance against hormone deprivation therapy, which is the
most common form of treatment in men with metastatic prostate cancer.

Assessing Insulin Resistance Can Inform About Breast Cancer Risk
In a previous work the authors analyzed a large cohort of breast
cancer patients to look whether an association existed between the
risk of tumor development and the presence of the metabolic syndrome
-- a syndrome that predisposes to cardiovascular and other diseases,
which is characterized by abdominal obesity, high levels of
triglycerides and low concentrations of HDL cholesterol, increased
blood pressure and insulin resistance.

le risque
5 nouvelles régions (loci) du génome humain liées à un risque accru de
cancer de l'ovaire viennent d’être découvertes par cette collaboration
internationale de chercheurs menée par la « Duke ». C’est une analyse
de l'information génétique chez plus de 40.000 femmes qui a permis
cette identification. Les résultats ont donné lieu à la publication de
4 études, 2 dans la revue Nature Communications et 2 dans l’édition du
27 mars 2013 de Nature Genetics.
