I read somewhere that you need to change your toothbrush every 3 months.
Is there any rationale behind this or this like 'you need to buy a
diamond like worth 2 months salary' kind of thing - propagated by the
industry.

The toothbrush companies obviously want people to buy more brushes,
but there is a reason for replacing your brush every three months.

Toothbrush bristles fray. As they fray, the effectiveness of the
toothbrush is reduced so it doesn't clean as well. You can feel a big
difference in the cleaning ability when you get a new toothbrush after
a long time, particularly with electric toothbrush heads.
