THE EFFECTS OF THE FALL
We do not know how long it was before Adam exercised his will contrary to the
will of God, thus breaking, immediately and completely, the fellowship which
had existed between Adam and God. Sin severed the creature from fellowship
with the Creator! And the effects of Adam's sin are far-reaching. In the first
chapter of the book of Romans, the Apostle Paul shows the effects of Adam's
sin. First of all, the apostle shows that the intellect of man was darkened by
the fall, so that man in his intellect could not know God. Romans 1:19-20
states, "That which may be known of God is manifest in them [that is, among
them]; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him [that
is, about God] from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being
understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so
that they are without excuse." From these verses we learn that creation is a
revelation of the wisdom of God, and that nature is an open book in which all
men may see two things: God's eternal power, and His Godhood or deity. But
even though men were able, through that revelation, to know something of God,
how did they respond? "When they knew God, they glorified him not as God,
neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations [that is, their
thought processes], and their foolish heart [that is, their seat of
perception], was darkened" (Rom. 1:21). In Ephesians 4:17 the same truth is
affirmed: "This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth
walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity [or, emptiness] of their mind,
having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God
through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their
heart." There, the apostle affirms again what he taught in Romans 1, that the
heart of the natural man is darkened because of sin. The apostle did not say
that the mind is blindfolded, but rather, blinded. If one has been
blindfolded, all he needs to do is to remove the blindfold and he will see.
But Paul says that men have been blinded by sin. They no longer have the
capacity to see. The first great result then of Adam's sin is that man's
intellect was darkened.
Not only was man's intellect darkened but his emotional capacity was degraded.
"God . gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to
dishonour their own bodies between themselves: who changed the truth of God
into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who
is blessed for ever, Amen. For this cause, God gave them up to vile
affections" (Rom. 1:24-26a). In Ephesians 4:19 we read: "Who being past
feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all
uncleanness with greediness." It is not that man lost his emotional capacity,
but his emotional capacity was so perverted and prostituted that it cannot be
directed Godward. Thus the natural man cannot experience fellowship between
his heart and the heart of God.
Romans 1 closes by showing us another result of Adam's fall: the will of man
was deadened Godward. In verse 32 we learn that men, "knowing the judgment of
God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the
same [notice it, do the same], but have pleasure in them that do them." In
Romans 7:18 Paul says, "I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no
good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is
good I find not." Natural man is marked by the deadness of his will toward
God. In Romans 8:7, the apostle says, "The carnal mind is enmity against God:
for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." In Galatians
5:17 the apostle again adds his testimony, "The flesh lusteth against the
Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to
the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would." When you put these
passages together, you find that Paul consistently teaches that while a man
still has a will, and can choose, his will is a will that is enslaved to sin,
a will that cannot and will not exercise itself Godward, a will that wills
only that which is iniquitous.
Because of the fall of Adam, man has been brought under judgment and under a
curse, but he still continues to be a man. He did not lose his personality; he
has not been degraded to the level of an animal. But it is impossible for man
to exercise his God-given capacities Godward. The unsaved man has an
intellect, but it has been darkened and he cannot know God; he has an
emotional capacity, but it has been degraded, and he cannot love God; he has a
will that has been deadened toward God and he cannot and will not obey God.
Even though God created us for fellowship with Himself, so that He might be
glorified through our fellowship with Him, that purpose is unattainable in the
natural man. Man still bears the image of God and possesses the component
parts of personality, yet he has been so bound and enslaved that he cannot
exercise these parts of His personality Godward to the glory of God.

Sexual Addiction - Overview
Like a dog that returns to its vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.

indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires... having eyes full of

computer sex (cybersex) Prostitution or use of prostitutes

Generally, a person with a sex addiction gains little satisfaction
from the sexual activity and forms no emotional bond with his or her
sex partners. In addition, the problem of sex addiction often leads to
feelings of guilt and shame. A sex addict also feels a lack of control
over the behavior, despite negative consequences (financial, health,
social and emotional).
How Is Sexual Addiction Treated?
Most sex addicts live in denial of their addiction, and treating an
addiction is dependent on the person accepting and admitting that he
or she has a problem. In many cases, it takes a significant event --
such as the loss of a job, the break-up of a marriage, an arrest or
health crisis -- to force the addict to admit to his or her problem.

If anyone had to endure the folly of well-intentioned human
counselors it was Job. Their irrelevant, useless advice was as much a
grief to him as the satanic afflictions he suffered. The depth to
which sanctified psychotherapy can sink is really quite profound. A
local newspaper recently featured an article about a thirty- four-bed
clinic that has opened up in Southern California to treat "Christian
sex addicts."? 12? (The reason for beds in this kind of clinic escapes
me.) According to the article, the clinic is affiliated with a large
and well-known Protestant church in the area. Its staff comprises
specialists described as "real pioneers in the area [of sexual
addictions]. These are all legitimate, licensed psychotherapists who
happen to have a strong Christian orientation to therapy," according
to the center's director.? 13? Does their "Christian" orientation
happen to be solid enough to allow these psychotherapists to admit
that lasciviousness is sin? Evidently not. Several were interviewed
for the article. They consistently used the terms illness, problem,
conflict, and compulsive behavior, treatment, and therapy. Words with
moral overtones were carefully avoided. Sin and repentance were never
mentioned. Worse, these so-called experts scoffed at the power of
God's Word to transform a heart and break the bondage of sexual sin.
The article quoted the center's program director, who explained why he
believes his treatment center specifically for Christians is so
crucial: "There are some groups of Christians who believe the Bible is
all you need."? 14? That statement is the echo of neo-gnosticism.
Belittling those who believe the Bible is sufficient, these latterday
"clouds without water" (Jude 12) insist they are privy to a higher,
more sophisticated secret knowledge that holds the real answer to what
troubles the human soul. Don't be intimidated by their false claims.
No higher knowledge, no hidden truth, nothing besides the
all-sufficient resources that we find in Christ exists that can change
the human heart. Any counselor who desires to honor God and be
effective must see the goal of his efforts as leading a person to the
sufficiency of Christ. The view that man is capable of solving his own
problems, or that people can help one another by "therapy" or other
human means, denies the doctrine of human depravity and man's need for
God. It replaces the Spirit's transforming power with impotent human
wisdom.

Happiness-Moral Harmony. Peace of Principle Happiness or moral harmony
is a perfect balance between our inclination and our environment. The
peace of principle keeps a man's moral nature in a state of harmony.
(a) Pride of Integrity (?Luke 18:11?) Integrity means the unimpaired
state of anything, and pride in the integrity of a man or woman's
morality will produce happiness. They have no need of prayer, or if
they do pray it is a soliloquy of peace before high heaven. The
?Pharisee in Our Lord's parable? was happy; he was not praying to God,
or that others might hear; he was praying "?with himself?"-"?God, I
thank Thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust,
adulterers, or even as this publican.?" Look at him, then put your own
name behind him and you have got his portrait exactly; you know where
he lives and everything about him. Beware of calling this type of
happiness self-righteousness; the phrase which gives the true meaning
would be "?happy satisfaction with my intellectual and moral
conduct.?" That happiness is impregnable to God and to the devil; its
true emblem is ice. If you want to find an analysis of every kind of
moral and immoral character, the Bible is the place to look for it.
This picture in Luke 18 is not the picture of a man of the world, but
of a religious man. As Christians we have to beware of Pharisaic
holiness along the line of sanctification.
(b) The Pain of Iniquity (?Luke 18:13?) This is the stage when the
peace of principle has broken down. "?When Thou with rebukes doth
correct man for iniquity, Thou makest his beauty to consume away like
a moth?" (?Psalm 39:11?). According to the steadily reiterated
teachings of Jesus Christ, a man who is in moral harmony with himself
without being rightly related to Jesus Christ, is much nearer the
devil than a bad-living man. Harmony, both physical and moral, is
God-ordained, i.e. it is God's will that a man's body with all its
component parts should be in perfect harmony with themselves and with
the outer world, and it is God's will that a man should be in moral
harmony with himself and happy in that sense; and yet, as we have
pointed out, the Bible reveals that a man can have physical health at
the cost of his moral welfare, and happiness at the cost of spiritual
