Amiodarone side effects

This afternoon my cardiologist prescribed amiodarone to eliminate my
increasingly frequent bouts of atrial fibrillations. PubMed lists over 2000
items under the search terms "amiodarone side effects." Here are a few of

My cardiologist said that Amiodarone negatively affects nearly every bodily
system. I guess your research supports that conclusion.

The side effects are numerous, and may sound severe, but from what I was
told when I was put on it, that's at least partly due to being used quite
commonly in people who were quite old and quite sick. About 8 years ago
I was put on Cordarone, and really didn't have any major side effects for
about 4 years. But I then came down with hyperthyroidism and had to be
taken off. I felt comfortable with Amiodarone when I was on it, it
really seemed effective in quelling irregular beats, and helped ease my
mind.

Certainly Amiodarone has POTENTIALLY severe adverse effects, however
it is one of the few anti-arrhythmics that don't make the patient WORSE.

The really bad stuff, especially pulmonary fibrosis and hyopthyroidism are
"catachable" if the patient is monitored. It helps if the patient is being
treated in
the context of a complete health care environment where the pharmacist that
dispenses the amiodarone is alert and inquistive about changes in the
patient's health and or
compliance, the GP makes time for regular visits and physical exam/ lab work
and that
the patient has access to a cardiologist for intervention when something
goes wrong
