Not sure if this is on-topic for these newsgroups, so please
redirect me if there is a more appropirate NG.

I am helping a friend set practice questions for a SAT type of
exam using Microsoft Word.
I am looking for some free software which allows me to draw
basic shapes (triangles, circles, parallelograms, rects) etc, mark
angles, etc & export them as jpgs or gifs or pngs.
The drawings I want to do are very simple.

I googled & downloaded some of the free software available, but
they don't seem to be easy to use or don't have some basic features.
So if someone here has any recommendations, please let me know.

As of now, I am drawing this with paintbrush & copy/pasting into
Microsoft Word. But this is rather difficult, because I cannot edit
figures I have already drawn easily. Plus adding text (sides, points,
variable names etc) is painful.

I have never tried this, but see if it does the trick.

For something more powerful (albeit some more learning curve), you
could try Maxima.

You could also peruse these: http://www.personal.kent.edu/~rmuhamma/Mathematics/mathsoftware.html

You might also try the list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_computer_algebra_systems

For simple diagrams, why are you not using the draw tool in word?
Click the insert tab then click on shapes and you'll get a variety of
draw elements you can choose. You can click on these and then click
and drag to position or size your element. Use tab to get your text in
the right location although it is sometimes easier to drag your shape
to the text. Good luck.
You can also search for Geogebra which is a slightly more
sophisticated program which you can get as a free download.

I've used dia for block diagrams and such. I think it
is what you may be looking for.

Word's own drawing toolbar covers all you've mentioned so far and much more.
