windows), I uninstalled it and reinstalled still no go . I tried 5.9.0 works
OK ran test suite a got a No problem message.
Any suggestions.?

Glad to hear it. By the way, what's your RH version?
and did you install from precompiled rpms or did you compile it?

The Xmaxima GUI talks to Maxima through a socket.
That attracts the attention of the MS security stuff.
I'm guessing that the security software has a control
panel where you can change the "Block TCL" to "Unblock TCL"
or something like that.
If you can't find the control panel you might try
asking on a Windows-specific newsgroup.
By the way there is a command line shortcut included
in the Windows installation -- that should still
work even if Maxima/Xmaxima is blocked.
Let us know how it turns out, I'll bet other people
have run into the same problem.

I'm guessing the Windows XP Firewall, introduced with SP2,
is turned on. You can view and change the settings for it
through the Control Panel (its Windows Security Center in
the "classic view" and simply Security Center in the touchy
feely XP "components view"). Drill down to the Firewall
tabbed dialog box, and you'll probably find the checkbox
to block Maxima 5.9.2 (and allow 5.9.0) on the second tab.

I use Zone Alarm as my firewall, and I'm inexpert on the MS
configuration. But it looks like the checkboxes control if
Internet access is allowed by individual programs/services.

all have entries in the firewall list, checked (i e allowed)
so I suspect maybe a problem introduced in 5.9.1 I am in the process of
reportin a maixima bug.
Thanks

[snip some of thread, mostly mine, about XP firewall config]
The other "dimension" of the Firewall policy is the set of
ports (port numbers) allowed for the programs. The 3rd tab
of the Security Center/Windows Firewall dialog box might
shed some light on that.
As a diagnostic, I'd try disabling the XP Firewall briefly,
perhaps while not connected to the Internet, and see if the
programs start working. For what it's worth, I uninstalled
5.9.0 and installed 5.9.2, and it's working (at least as
well as 5.9.0 did!).
