If I never reason, does that mean I stare blankly and just go along with
automatic limb movements to get me around? If I am also conscious in that
scenario then I am continually taken by surprise by what I am doing.
However, if I reason, then I am not taken by surprise by what I am doing
because I have already worked out what I will be doing. But in both cases I
am doing something. Whether I want to do it, or not, could be anticipated or
not anticipated, but the anticipation won't tell me whether I am happy in
doing it.
There's something wrong with the idea of 'reasoning' isn't there?

Then why did you ask, if you already have your answer? Critical Realism
(usually in caps) labels a particular position in the philsophy of
science. Put it in your browser and you'll find plently of websites,
journals, etc, devoted to it.
