"Ne laissez pas la réalité endiguer un débat
philosophique de haute volée".

L'idée est que certains (les Français, parait-il) ne se
laissent pas distraire par les éléments de réalité qui
pourrait compromettre la teneur d'un débat philosophique
sur des sujets nobles.

The idea is that some (French people some say) don't
let themselves distracted by elements of reality which
could derail a high minded philosophical debate about
noble subjects.

I think that France is one of the rare countries where
philosophy is taught to all pupils in the final year
of the "lycée". They even teach psychanalyse without
mentionning that it is contested worldwide by all
kinds of competent practitionners. But that doesn't
deter them from teaching you what you should believe.

Excuse my rant!

"elements of reality" is [also?] a quantum mechanical concept:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPR_paradox>

Phylosphically, reality seems to me to be a unit
that cannot be divided in different elements
but this reality could be conceptually diverse.

1
"Noble subjects" = peers of the realm.
[Dukes, Marquesse, Earls, Viscounts, Barons, Baronets]

2
A derail = a device used to prevent fouling of a track by unauthorized
movements of trains or unattended rolling stock. ;-)

... could jeopardise a philosophical debate about honorable topics ..

> high minded philosophical debate

high minded = noble ;-)

>> un débat philosophique de haute volée

perhaps:

... a superior philosophical discussion ...

What I meant was "facts (about reality)"

I'll be very surprised if that's the intended meaning here. Surely
"subjects" refers to topics for discussion, and "noble" refers to
highminded topics (the nature of the good, say, rather than the design
of sewage systems) rather than to membership of the aristocracy.

Indeed, "Sujets nobles" refer to highminded topics. What do
you understand when you read "noble subjects" in that context?

Whatever the context, the first thought of a true British would be that
"subjects" are those of Her Majesty. :)

Wasn't Isaac a true Bristish? :)

"of philosophical learning, it cannot be improper to explain
such passages therein as seem obscure and difficult. ... The
noble subjects this work treats of being no less than the
grand fabric of the world, and the whole system of ..."

The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy:
Volume 2 - Page 85. Sir Isaac Newton, William Davis,
William Emerson - 1803

By searching the phrase with Google books, I found that
it appears mainly in ancient texts. Is that expression
"passé"?
