Any suggestions on how to stop this flood of spam?

I've reported it repeatedly to Google, but they don't
seem to block the poster.

That, and put the poster in your kill file.

I read slj via an RSS reader these days (Google Reader).
I don't think it has killfile capabilities.

I'm more concerned about the group itself; not that it has

It seems like Google is failing you in many ways. I wonder, then, why
not choose a better service.

You're right to be concerned; but I think that pinging Google to stop
the spam (and asking others to do the same; every spam message sent via
Google has the ‘Complaints-To’ field right there in the header, folks!)
is the way to do it.

I could easily fire up Thunderbird again, but it's nice having
slj and fjlij integrated into the one tab with the other RSS-based
services I read. The downside is the lack of threading and
killfiles. On balance I'll stick with the RSS approach for now.

I've done dozens, but it doesn't seem to result in much. It's so easy
to change email addresses.

Hi, Jim,

I´ve been puzzling over all this spam, too.

What I find most strange about it, although I participate in several
Google groups, this is the only one that has this spam. Also, I use
Gmail and its spam filter is quite good. Somehow, either this group
has been "hacked" or the spammer is a "member" of the group and
possibly using hacker skills to hide his identity. So I´m also trying
to figure out what´s so different about this group compared to the
other Google groups I´m in, for this one to be having all this spam
when the other ones don´t...

For one thing, I think the other groups I´m in are "closed", so that a
new member has to be approved by a moderator. Also, this is the only
group that gives me a message telling me that it is a "Usenet group",
and that my messages will be visible to anyone on Intenet...

Could these points be making the difference?

Gassho,
Isshin

Absolutely. sci.lang.japan is a "Usenet group" and
existed long before the WWW was invented. People
can use it without going near Google. "Google
Groups" began as an assembly of Usenet groups
(they bought out an earlier system called "Deja
News".)

The reason I am complaining about Google, is that
it appears the spams are being posted via the
Google groups interface. Looking at the headers in
the spam posts we see:

Path: g2news2.google.com!postnews.google.com!
f8g2000yqn.googlegroups.com!not-for-mail

and

X-Trace: posting.google.com 1266243796 10367 127.0.0.1 (15 Feb 2010

X-Complaints-To: groups...@google.com

User-Agent: G2/1.0
X-HTTP-UserAgent: Opera/9.21 (Windows NT 5.1; U;

Unfortunately the Usenet system wasn't designed to
restrain spammers.

I've found that Google seems to be about a month
behind in paying attention to any spam reports, and possibly
also waiting for a certain number of people to report the same
spam.

Do you have a newsreader capable of searching incoming
posts for any mention of a certain web site, and deleting
all such messages? I wish I did - my current newsreader
can do search only after moving all the incoming messages
to a storage folder, which blocks being able to send any
to the messages which aren't deleted.

Do you have a newsreader capable of detecting all messages
sent through Google, even those with incorrect return
addresses, and deleting them? I've read that that method
blocks most of the spam, but also a smaller number of posts
actually on topic and reasonable for the newsgroup they're
posted in.

How does that help block the many spammers who decide to use
each return address they use in a post only once, unless it's a return
address they've extracted from someone else's post?

Some newsreaders allow searching for a certain string of characters
in the subject line when deciding what to block; mine does, but not
reliably.

Actually it was designed so it can much of the time for
SOME newsgroups - the rather few that are moderated,
and therefore usually have ".moderated" somewhere in
the newsgroup name.

The spam that appears in those newgroups is almost
always from spammers who know how to fake the
moderator's approval when sending it, something
most newsreader programs do not offer any way to do.

Also, I've seen some websites offering methods of doing
some filtering when reading news through Google Groups,
but I've never tested how well they work.

In case Google blocks you from seeing complete web addresses,
note that many of these appear to be something you can find by
doing a Google search for web sites containin all three of these
words:

killfile solution google
