I realise that good old sci.lang.japan is pretty
moribund these days, and those of us who hang around
(I've been reading it since 1989) should be grateful
for any posts that happen.

That said, I find postings consisting solely of a
flowery subject line and a link to a WWW site or a
search-engine to be rather off-putting. Can I suggest
the following as an appropriate structure for postings:

- a short subject, setting the context, e.g. "Meaning
of 馬鹿";
- one or more sentences in the body of the posting, either
asking question(s), making points, etc. URLs may be
included to supplement the posting.

In general, a posting consisting solely of a URL is
NOT acceptable. It's saying to group members "I've
read this, and I think you should read it too, but I can't
be bothered saying what it is about or why you might find it
interesting".

I do not bother following links when they are the sole
content of a posting.

Cheers

Jim

As a former six-year resident of Japan and now subsequently a 20-year
lurker in this group, I concur completely. Thoughtful posts on points
of grammar, syntax, or meaning are valuable, at least to me; abstruse
references usually result in disappointment.

Somebody had to say it, Jim. Thanks for laying it out clearly.
