Tonight, TCM telecast UKIGUSA (1934) and it was like watching a
regular silent movie in that it had dialogue printed after an actor
said something. Would 1934 have been about the time that BENSHI were
going out of style? Also, would UKIGUSA have had any background
music?

I was surprised to see WOJISAN. Also when the troupe head was
speaking to his actresses, he would use the word TEMAE.

You'll see a lot of that if you go back before WWII.
Japanese used to have what one might call actually "spelling."
(Where the kana used to write the word did not match the pronunciation of
the word.)

Then came a great standardization movement and nearly all of that was
removed.
Almost everything was changed to "what you say is what you see."

Oddly, the Japanese could not seem to bring themselves to do this with the
particles "は” ("wa," which is usually "ha") and "を" ("o," which is usually
"wo.") I wonder why. Maybe there's a deep-seated psycholinguistic reason. (I
do know that "を" often comes out as "wo," but not always.)
