Hello,
Sen hiku ni *wa* ichi.
(From Jack Halpern's Kanji dictionary, page 102, character 181
"hiku," bottom left column, left page.)
3 - 2 = 1.
Why is "wa" chosen instead of "ga" and how would the meaning change
if "ga" were substituded for "wa"?

I was having trouble with Halpern's arithmetic. I thought "sen hiku ni-wa
kyuuhyakukyuujuuhachi." Then I saw the translation.

probably respond with something like, "maa, san hiku nii-wa ichi-da-kedo..."
I was trying to avoid using "dore," but after all, "... ichi-ni naru-no-wa
dore?" is better. Except then the answer would be only "san hiku nii," and
we don't have either "-wa" or "-ga."
