What is the 「しがい」 in 「研究のしがいがある」?

I recently encountered the construction 「研究のしがい」, and I can't find a
「しがい」 to match in any of my dictionaries. The phrase seems to mean
"worthy of research," but what is this 「しがい」?

I'd guess it's a shortened form of 「する甲斐」.

That pattern: "...のしがいがある" is quite common, e.g.

その街は仕事のしがいのある場所かもしれないと思った。
I thought that the city might be a satisfying place for
me to work. (Eijiro)
あんな男が亭主じゃお前さんも苦労のしがいがないね．
With a husband like that, it isn’t worth you going to any
trouble， is it？ (Kenkyusha)
辛抱のしがいがある be worth putting up with
