Good afternoon Lawrence,
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. This warning can be very
confusing and I will be happy to clear things up for you. Your unit not
only has the Americas Highways basemap, (which is burned onto an EPROM chip
that can neither be edited nor erased) it also has a Marine Point of
Interest data base.
The Marine Point of Interest data base is a very simplistic map with basic
navigational aids such as lights and buoys. This is for our customers who
choose not to purchase any MapSource maps for their units to make it a more
universal unit on land and water. This Marine POI data based is housed on
the same flash memory that the MapSource maps download to. Since the
MapSource program goes out and erases the flash memory prior to each
download, this data gets erased when MapSource maps are downloaded. Most of
our MapSource mapping products have just as much, if not more, of this same
basic data. So, it usually does not present a problem. If however, you
wish to recover this data, it can be downloaded to your desktop to download
back into your unit when needed. This is available from the download page
where you update the software of your unit on our website. However, you can
not have both the Marine POI data base and MapSource on your unit at the
same time. This is an either/or situation.
If you have any further questions please contact Garmin.

This is true for the Topo maps, the R&R maps (which are now rather
dated), and the old MetroGuide maps. Unfortunately, the MG vers. 5 maps
no longer have the marine NAVAIDS and these are the maps most likely to
be purchased by a user of a Legend or Vista looking for the best
available US streetmaps to download.

Given the MG v.5 situation it would be nice if Garmin would either allow
parts of the Marine POI to coexist with some MapSource maps or to add
the marine POIs to the next version of MG.
>so what do we do about the incorrect mile marker designations? Southeast and
Florida are actively changing Interstate exits to actual mile marker
locations. My Garmin Legend from the factory was incorrect and I need to be
accurate when describing directions from my garmin gps.
